My dealer said should be inspected at 12,000 mile service. Mine only did 7,800 miles whan I was tipped off to check them and found rusty bearing and worn bushes! Seems like the dust seal sare pants, noticed the new seals I got were different from the original gold/blue ones (blue bit is a rubberised coating). New ones are grey with black rubber coating. New ones are a pig to fit and don't look up to the job.

Bloody hell, I bet a load of our bikes have been neglected in that area, I bet mine has.
Not being mechanically minded I'm clueless when looking at the bike

Hi all,I decided to check the condition of my suspension bearings after reading this thread,HOLY MOTHER OF GOD,the bloody italians are worse than Hinckley when it comes too misplacing the `mythical` pot of bearing grease :thumbdown:crazy.Well my *******s are ****** and well seized in :banghead. What is the best way to drift them out ? Iv`e tried a socket and hammer,my home made bearing puller(threaded bar and washers) but no joy at getting them to move(been soaking them in penetrating fluid over night)

Regards to all

Gloin

well at least some good has come out of this, i hope this can save others from the near disaster i could of had

Ye glad your ok and thanking you and the rest of the guys that have given info in this thread. I just spent the evening checking, cleaning and re greasing the linkeage fortunately looks like its been done before :thumbup

Yep,stripped and checked mine today,...its been a while since I'd done it.Bearings were ok,..just starting to go dry again,so just lubed them up with fresh grease.
This thread jogged my memory.

What I don't understand is , this is surely a safety issue , why haven't Aprilia recalled Tuonos back to replace or do what ever they have to do to solve the problem ?!

+1

Great product (potentially)
Crap company....I wish to god they'd get themselves taken over by the Germans...that'd sort the fuckers out...

Jesus this is an eye opener! I wouldnt even have thought to check the dogbone bearings, I'm not so thorough on maintenance as to check these things. The thought of this failing at high speed or on a bend when the bike's over on its ear is too scary to think about!! Will be checkin mine when I fit my new reg/rec later this week!!!! Not confident of what I'll find but great thread for highlighting the potential for failure!!!
Cheers :)

Lol wouldnt be so appealing if it was German tho….I love German cars but their bikes are fugly!!! I remembe reading road test reports on the Tuono in various mags and sites and all suggested it was a bombproof alternative to a finicky Ducati, only more mental! Seemed like a perfect combo…….****** bikes been more time broken down than bein mental….still love it tho, it builds a nice understanding, having to fix and check **** so much more than a jap bike , thats the way I'm tryna look at it at least lol ;) Frankfurters or pizza…….****** pizza everytime!!!!
Cheers

I wonder if you could drill and tap for a zerk fitting without compromising strength. Be easy to zap it once in awhile with grease that way.

zerk fitting,....I guess you mean grease nipple in old language?:yes
The dog bone would need both ends doing,...and then there is the bearing in the swingarm. Not sure about drilling holes in there.:no

Yes, thats what we call them at the steel mill, zerk. Nipple just sounds right though:lol mmmm nipple

I did my KLR 650 with said nipples and never have had a problem. Big difference between it and my T though.

GLOIN You need to sacrifice a 15 mm socket on one side to drift out the bearings, a 17mm socket to drift them into on the other side and a long bolt through the middle bolt on one side and start tightening til they drift! Easier said than done! The swing arm bearing is a sod of a job, and will take patience to remove old and fit new.

Espaceman3 - this doesn't address aforementioned swingarm suspension lug needle roller bearings !

I've been thinking about Drilling down the centre of the bolt and fitting a nipple on the head and cross drilling half way down.
seen this in off road suspension ktm and some off road 4x4 shackles but i'm not sure if it will take too much strength out of the bolt and just give me another problem
Bolts are M10 I believe

Not much meat on the dogbone for a grease nipple or the lug on the frame or the one on the swing arm!

You can't mate as the bolts go through a metal bushing/sleeve, the bushing rotates against the needle rollers. Unless you drilled the bolt & bushing, both would compromise strength.

got the new parts today , still in the bag from aprilia but there seems to be a problem with the aprilia production line, the ******* greace gun seems to be broken.
i took the internal sleeve out and the needles seem dry WTF, no wonder they fail
