I have a question about the oil level.

Got myself a brand new RSV, delivered at home, because I´m still recovering of a crash I have made with my previous bike.:dowhat

Now, I was yesterday waxing the bike for the first time. So I could do at least something on my bike as long I can´t ride.

I´m getting 2 the point now....

I saw that the oil level in the visualisation pipe is empty. I have looked in the book I got with the bike and there stands that the level could get under min. when the engine is cold, but under or totally nothing is a different, no?

I did have started the bike before and the oil pressure light dosn´t light up when the engine was running. But I don´t dare to try to let the engine warm up, causing the engine to ruin.

PLS!!!! Someone, help me out. Should I do anything or just call the shop and get someone over here?:dunno

My oil is not visable when cold. You need to run her up to full temp (about 5-10 miles for the oil) and check the level as soon as you turn her off with the bike upright.

Mine was the same when I got mine new. Keep in mind, it will go down to either min-or below min when cold. That said, also remember that traditionally, factories will always put only the min amount of oil in the bikes when new. They do that to save $$$$. At any rate, I'm sure your bike can use a little more oil.

Now I'm sure you're going to ask which kind of oil to use right? LOL

No... I know what kind of oil to use.:biggrin

But anyway, thanx a lot for both the quick responses.:thumbup

Now I'm worried!

Guys

Your replies have got me worried now. My oil level is just below max when fully warm and upright but it is the same when the bike is fully cold. I haven't added any oil since I bought it in July and have covered 2000 miles since without any incident but do you think it's been over filled? :dunno

Strange....:dowhat

if in doubt, drain the oil and measure out exactly 3.7 litres and pour into your oil tank. do a ten mile run, check it, and top up a little if necessary. keep the bike running and upright (not on side stand) to get an accurate reading.

your oil should not show max when the bike is cold. sometimes shows a little at the bottom, but not max. i'd drain and measure out correct ammount to be sure (see above).

Ok guys, the correct way to check the oil level on the rotax V twin engine ( this is a dry sump lubrication system and is different to you standard Japanese in line 4's ) is to ride the bike for a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes to get everything up to temperature. Stop somewhere flat and safe and switch off the engine. Immediately hold the bike upright and check the sight tube. The oil level should be no more than 2/3 rds the way up the sight tube. Adjust as neccesary. Any higher up the sight tube and oil will be forced into the airbox.

Oil may not show in the sight tube when the bike is cold as has been stated. Belgian Dude, just start the bike and let it tick over until warm keeping an eye on the sight tube you should see some oil in the sight tube, then if all is well check the correct level as described above

you should keep the engine running shouldn't you? im sure it says that in the handbook. the level drops when you turn the engine off

Dan.46, no you must switch the engine OFF and then immediately check the oil level as i've described above

another method and the one I use is to rev the bike to 4k whilst warm and whilts upright and check it then.

I aim for half way up the tube.

Gaz, just wondered why you check the oil in your bike this way? Have you tried both methods and is the reading the same for both ways in the sight tube? Aprilia themselves instruct the way i detailed above

badger and a few guys who race and do trackdays have told me to do this.

The reason I do it is that it gives a more accurate way of measuring the level. I've tried the run it till warm and measure etc but never end up with the same level twice, just a rough guess.
Using the 4k method the level is always at my hand drawn mark on the tank
