does anyone ken whit the deal is wi the oil filters, apparently there wis a mod to them,,,,,,??? as said before ,,,**** aw's straicht forrit:banghead

news to me pal. i only know the filter O ring is a right royal rip off, cant seem to match one up any place else.

keep us updated

There are two types of oil filter - the earlier bikes use a short filter, but later bikes have a longer filter case fitted and need a longer filter.

I am not sure of when exactly the change occurred - 08 ish, but I have read about some retro fittings.

I know both bikes here are short filters - an 05 & an 07. The new toy will be a long filter.

This was seemingly a recall from Aprilia!

My 2007 had to have the mod done at the last service, involves a new oil filter cover which is longer to support the longer oil filter. I think they are covered by Aprilia, if not they aint that expensive but it needs changed to the longer style.

I changed the oil and filter a few weeks back.I undid the plug ,left hand side bottom and drained, (gave it plenty of time). Replaced filter (short) . Replaced plug and refilled ,OK.
Filters ???. If you want to, you can buy the longer filter (better flow ??????????) and the extended filter cap. WHY??
If the bike came with a longer filter then I would replace with same.
Oil and filter (short for me ) £20 + £8 postage .I got 2 lots but I think you can have up to 4 kg, you can get a fair bit of stuff for the £8 so if your mates want oiletc. then get a few.

is there any benefit having the long filter ?????

There is a bit of debate over this. The reason quoted is that the oil pressure gets too high with the short filter and goes through the bypass gallery, unfiltered. The longer case & filter is supposed to be a cure, but many people figure the engine has been around since 1998 without problems so why bother.

If it isn't broke - dont fix it? :dunno

It's your choice.

thats what i were thinking why change if its not a problem. maybe if you do a lot of trackday or racing . ill stick with the short one

In my humble opinion ,for general use the only thing we should consider tinkering with is the bollox Euro restrictions that effect the performance of the engines.
When we spend our hard earned dough we don't just purchase a motorbike we invest in the technology that the manafacturers have been working on for years.

long filter provides better flow and filtering but does not have a bypass valve and may cause you to get an oil light every now and then. After talking with the local aprilia rep, I am keeping the long filter and ignoring the oil light

ach its aw a mystery minefield, ;lol,,,, think ahll just pit on whats awready there, as said above if it aint ****** just leave it, cheers dudes

good explanation from another forum

The larger filter has more surface area which results in less restriction as the filter gets dirty and better filtration over the long haul. Less restriction means better flow and better lubrication for the engine.

Beyond that, I'm not sure why Aprilia decided to increase the filter size. I'm sure there were some secret engineering meetings where they decided on that direction.

It`ll be fine mate, just replace like for like , take the bike out and thrash the balls off it

but in my defence I have offered an opinion on this subject.:yes
