Just purchased a new 2016 Capo 1200 Rally this summer (2018). Drove it for 4 days, 1050 Km and then it was off to the dealer for the first hi $ service. Upon draining the oil it was found the oil to be a gold color and after a closer look the oil is contaminated with a substantial amount of brass / bronze colored flakes. This to me is an indication of some substantial wear of a bearing or transmission component with potential for catastrophic failure immanent. The dealer contacted the manufacturer and they said first thing was to inspect the camshafts and bearings top end as they said this has been reported before. Can anyone verify if they have heard of this? Otherwise the responsible thing is for the manufacturer / dealer to completely replace the engine / transmission I would say, or the bike. However that is not an option as apparently they don't produce them anymore.

Hi Reggirroo from Aus.

I have heard of this before (on the AF1 forum site.....2014-2017 capo12 forum).

It's probably the idler bearings at the top sprocket of the cam chain - where it becomes gear driven to the cam shafts.

These bearings caused loud tapping noises on some Caponord's and were replaced under warranty. It was a huge area of complaint in the early forum posts... something to do with wrong size bushes or faulty material.

I remember my Capo12 (a 2014TP purch new in 2015) wasn't too noisy so I just used good oil (Motul 5100 15w50) and changed it at half service intervals...... but others had real rattlers and got those idler bushings replaced.

I had no major problems with mine..... I did 40,000kms before going to the dark side (KTM1290SDGT)...... another guy in the USA has 80,000miles on his Capo.........

I'm sure your Rally will be fixed and back to 100% - these engines also need to run in on semi synthetic for a while before any change to full synth.....

Cheers

Ps you are correct, Capo12's have been out of production since 2016/17 - if you are near to AF1 they are a respected Caponord dealership.

OP hasn't been back, wondering what the outcome was?
my low mile Capo is a little tappy noised

just dumped the oil and it was slightly brassy looking
certainly nothing that I would call a flake
more like just typical clutch material

don't know what oil the original owner had in there
I do know he skipped the 1,000 km dealer service
and did it himself

bike now has 3,000 km on it, and is out of warranty
I'm gonna take it in anyway and prepare to be bent over
