A bit of press a few months back talking of re-opening the Newcastle to Bergen route......

I know they needed funding etc but anyone know if this is gonna happen ?

Did a road trip in 2007 (in car) and stuck it on me bucket list to go back on a bike but they closed the route in 2008....

I know its **** speed limits and huge fines & its £7 a pint but....... it just has to be done.

fingers crossed something does happen....

still no direct sailings to Bergen, will speak to the brother in law at the weekend as he works for a Norwegian holiday company (Din Turs) and see if he has heard anything, so if this pans will be able to get cheap accomadation

Please can I have suggestions as to how I to tell the missus about this one.

I have already told her about another trip to the IOM.

I may have to start racking up brownie points soon.

better start now mate i think you will need a lot of points, as for telling her just send a text from the ferry 'see you next week' :lol

Years ago, one of my mates went out for a shovel of coal & sneaked off to Blackpool for a long week end.

His missus lost her sense of humour over that one.

At present the only available route is ;
North East - Harwich (via Lincoln) 300 miles all A and B roads
Harwich - Esjberg (ferry) £78 return
Esjberg - Hirtshalls (road) 201 miles on the scenic coastal route
Hertshals - Bergen (ferry) awaiting quote - other destinations are available from this port

Hertshals - Bergen (ferry) online quote was £178 for 1 person with bike

Also did the "Ice Road", the 32km tunnel etc etc...

Bollocks..... i need to go there now !!!!!

if required we could get a ferry to Stavanger or Kristinsand and have a mooch around there, pretty sure the roads will be as much the same :dunno

Ahv driven aboot a fair bit up an doon the east side and a bit o central Norway thru work so ah kin vouch for how stunning maist o it is.
While speeding is a big no no wi the Noggies polis ye really jist need tae watch oot around the main cities and toons like Oslo Kristiansand Stavanger and Bergen. The Stavanger tae Bergen road particulalry is pretty busy awe the time cos o the oil biz etc. Also a lot o the tunnels ( an theres plenty o them) have cammeras as weell. However once away frae civilisation there next tae naebody, jist sheep an goats. Ye can drive for miles some days wi oot hardly meetin anither motor.....an thats usually some **** off artic coming roond a blind bend jist at the point the roads narrows tae one lane ( the inner fjord and mountain roads awe dae thatan it can be quite unexpected). Ye should also factor in ye will be hoppin on an off wee short ferries awe the time as weel unless ye want tae tak 50mile detours awe the time.

Crackin place tae ride yer bike but dear as hell but ah widnae let that pit ye off. Petrol isnae that bad compared tae UK as its nae taxed like we are and ye can travel an eat quite cheap if ye keep oot posh resteraunts and buy yer scran an carryoot in the local Kiwi or Rema stores.

The national dish o Norway is a deep filled pizza as weel so ye wid feel at hame.

Tiz a fair point about nippin on and off ferries...... did quite a few and suppose the cost does mount up !

Think i lasted about half an hour from leaving the ferry before i was flashed by a camera - first tunnel i went through, luckily didnt get pulled by anyone or anything in the post....

Paid best part of £20 for a pizza in the hotel on me first night...... (twas late on, everywhere else was shut)

I swear there must be summat in the water over there..... everywhere ya looked the lasses seemed to have been "blessed" in the chest department...

:)

Looks absolutely spot on.:thumbup

But I have sort of booked the IOM next year & I dont think the missus will take too kindly to two trips away.

I have had to cancel the Assen trip to keep her face straight (ish):bawling

I might pave the way for the following year if a cunning plan is put together.

looks like i will have to do a recce next year ready for the year after, pretty sure junior will keep me company

Where do you fancy ?

So many places to choose from.

A few days or longer ?

really tempted to do the four nights in Luxembourg unguided and have a good look around the Mosel Valley, some excellent roads around there and speaking the language defo helps. going to check out the price sailing from Hull to Zeebrugge as the fixed cost quoted is on Eurostar. if anyone is interested let me know and i will check out some dates, will need to check grape picking season as that is a no no for that area and take it from there.

Tiz a nice ride down the mosel valley...... not far from the Ring either.......

Had a few trips around europe, big place and lots to see...... most of the places i want to go (ie pyrenees etc) are a fair way away and needs a week or two to really do em justice. Getting there and back seems to take ages and seriously eats in to your time.... especially if you try to avoid motorways.

you up for this next year then mate?

Aim to get 1 trip abroad next year, but depends on finances as im working part time at the mo...

Done a lot of Belgium & Germany (brother lives there so used it as a base on many occasions), so would prefer to go somewhere else..... Pyrenees is on me bucket list, but time factor to get there and back makes it a bit of a problem......

I cant decide........Decisions decisions...
