Just received a NIPS for 50 in a 40 limit in my van at work.

I'm pleading guilty but I've heard of people doing a speed awareness couse instead of getting points on licence.

Anyone know how this works as I'd rather do the course than take the points as I've got the mille, a car and a van insured and the premiums will go up for sure.

The speed limit was 60 not long ago on this dual carriagway but it's now 40 as you leave it and I got caught unaware of the change.

Any advice appreciated. :thumbup

Did one of these two weeks ago. If you are eligable thay will notify you after you have admitted you were the driver.
They then give you a choice to take the £60.00 fine & 3 points or to pay £85.00 & do the half day course.
It's basically a big money making scam, hundreds of dodgy speed traps to maximise the amount of people they can catch.
Each course has 100 people a day, 5 days a week at £85.00 a pop

When I got done it was a 50mph dual carrageway, they put a few cones in the outside lane & one of those temporary 30mph signs & done me for doing 35

If you do the course don't admit to anything. My mate did one, they were all told everything they say there stays in the room - some ***** told them he was going to take the points for his son , but did the course cause it was better than the points- the old bill turned up, arrested him, put him in cuffs and took him away never to be seen again !!!

Yeah when I went they wanted photo ID & checked it against details & warned us about the above.
Piggy must have his pound of flesh!!

when they say anything you say stays in the room it doesn't mean you can confess to perverting the course of justice and expect to walk away free:jack

so many people complain about the courses but nobody forces them to take part you can take the points.

ACPO's guidelines for being eligible are-

•the speed of the driver / rider makes them eligible for a Speed Awareness Course (ie not greater than limit +10%+6mph).
•the driver / rider has NOT attended a Speed Awareness Course within the last 3 years,
•the driver / rider must agree to abide by the terms and conditions of the offer of the Speed Awareness Course (including timescales for completion - typically 4 months from date of alleged offence).

these are only guidelines and each force are able to set their own criteria and do not have to offer the course.
if all you have done is returned the s172 stating you were the driver then you will need to wait and see if they offer it.

if you look at the police or safety camera website for the area you were caught in it might have the criteria for offering a course on there.

the other great thing about accepting the course is that its not an admission of guilt.

Of course people will take this to avoid getting points on there licence & an increase in insurance premiums. My point is this is nothing to do with road safety, it is purely a money making scheme as the speed traps are set up in non residential areas where they know they can catch the maximum amount of people. But I agree you have to be a complete **** to admit to perverting the course of justice.

Thanks All.

I think I probably won't get the chance of the course as 50 in a 40 limit. Was pissed off tho as I was coming off a dual carriageway onto a normal road. No houses etc, only fields either side as far as you could see, plus the van up the road with a camera in the back. You wouldn't see anyone walking about there as it was like a by pass but it was a fantastic spot to cop someone speeding.
I've had a clean licence for about 6 years until this.

A mate of mine's a copper and he just got done the same as me.

Thing is, why do we pay coppers to do this at stupid money per hour when a pensioner or a 16 year old could easily sit and do the same thing for £6.00 an hour and be glad of the work. Summat wrong somewhere eh?

can't blame the individual coppers . they just do what they're told to do - blame the bosses who are chasing targets ( and revenue ) which is all politics not police work. Its the same with everyone, there are good and bad. I've had a copper pull me over and tell me he was doing over 120 and wasn't catching me, but because I slowed down to the speed limit in a built up area he let me off with a bolllocking. Another time I got nicked for 5 points after giving some bloke the finger for trying to knock me off ( another copper I reckon).

some days we're lucky, others we ain't !!
