MOT failed - Steering bearings

My 2003 Mille failed it's MOT today.

:(

Notchy feeling in the steering.

Is it possible to adjust the bearings to fix this?

The bike has an Ohlins damper (from the RSVR) is it possible that a problem with this could be mistaken for a bearing problem?

If I need new bearings then where can I get some good quality ones at a reasonable price and delivered quickly?

How much work is involved (in terms of time) in replacing the bearings?

I'd appreciate your help on this one guys.

Rob :)

This is who I use for OE spares good stock and fast delivery, a friend of mine had head bearings failed on second service and he's not a wheely nutter so there must be a problem with some of them. If you are fairly handy with a spanner I don't think it's a massive job but you will need to be able to support the bike whilst the front end is out, buy a Haynes manual that will give you all the info you need.

Big Jessie off here had a similar problem his turned out to be a knackered Ohlins Damper

I've changed the steering head bearings twice on my old bike and once of my new track bike. Check out my thread below.

Overall its an easy ish job if you have all the tools and can support the front end. I would highly recommend getting the bearings from Marksman Industrial as said in my thread above. Go for the tapered head bearings.

The hardest part of the job is getting the old outer races out of the frame and lower bearing off of the yoke but it's not difficult if you have a good hammer a punch. Any problems or questions let me know.

badgermilk hit it on the head. I've just changed my head bearings and got tapered roller bearings from "marksman bearingsl" (the number is 01252345455 and very helpful) which not only was a hell of a lot cheaper but they are better bearings than the ball race oe parts. It does take a while to do the job as you do need some decent kit. Marksman also supply a bottom seal with the kit which is not needed but took a while for me to work this out.
It is poss it could be the damper but unlikely, but it would only take two minutes to take it off and find out. I have just lubed and re-tightened old head races before to pass the mot but it's not really advisable

:thumbupYou want your head bearings to be as smooth and play free as possible regardless, think of it as a positive that they discovered it for you. New properly adjusted bearings do wonders for front end feel and confidence, as the front can track the road better and relay correct info

Good thing we don't have MOT for bikes in the Netherlands!

So how are safety standards of road vehicles ensured as they get older? I thought you had a thing called APK for vehicles over 3 years old? Are bikes excluded?

Rob :)

Yeah seriously mate , just F**k off. No one is even slightly convinced by your "copy and paste other peoples post so you sound like you know what the f**k your talking about" scam. If you knew anything about marketing, you`d realise no one buys anything from someone who sells by LIES! much less invades peoples space to do so!!! Its people like you that ruin it for genuine traders. Your name aint Jerry, you wouldnt know a steering damper if it were lodged in your eye socket, thats not your opinion, so I will assume you are untrustworthy, unhonorable, and everything you may be selling will be total *****. NOW F**K OFF!!!

try to keep in mind this is probably a scripted bot being operated by a dorky 13 year old kid who thinks he can scam enough money to buy himself an ipod by doing this... lol
once you think about the probable story its actually quite funny and also rather sad, if he invested the resources he has into other endeavours he could make a killer profit.. but noooo... lets spam a bike forum... lol

It might be my 13 year old!...I'd best check what he's up to when I get home. lol

LOL the concept of what the bots are doing is pretty cool i will admit, but like windows vista.. it was released before it was finished and now its gonna taint the whole idea behind it... another 6 hours giving the bot some basic understanding of context and individuality and it would actually fool people

i wish the mods would stop being silent about the matter though, would be nice to hear they are at least trying to fix the problem lol

All of that stuff is abit over my head buddy. Me just like ****ies and motorbikes!!

Lol, wel I have a limited grasp of it all.

But yeah I know what you mean, but without myself knowing how the tech works I dont know how you would stop it.
Maybe if you have some indepth knowledge you could offer them some ideas?

its basic forum security that needs checking, little things like the registration form having a SECURE captcha thing (you know where you gotta type the letters n numbers.. annoying.. but neccesary to stop bots)

then theres a surprising lack of response from any moderators, maybe i just havent noticed but i have not seen ANY of the reported posts/spammers being deleted, leaving them free to spam over and over again

and there are plenty of other options to make it worthless for a malicious person to target this forum, things like banning the use of links in your signature...

i have offered my help to the admin, but i dont think he checks the email very often, or there is some error with the contact system.. who knows he may well just not want helping

Hmm could calls. Maybe you should start a thread entitled can we stop spammers please or something with your suggestions in it. To get the mods attention...

We have an mot (indeed called apk) but bikes are excluded, still...
Most guys and gals take maintenance serious over here, your much more vulnerable on a bike than in a box on wheels. I presume that counts for the majority of people in the uk too?
