Help :confused, ive been looking at the forums as to the set ups of air boxes and cans an so on .... im confused :confused, mine has an AKRO race can and and the engine runs fine, now i want to do the air box mod so the bit im confused about is some say you dont need to chip and some say you dont :confused or is the chip only for the newer shape RSVs:confused.
Ive yet to check if the ECU has been done and if it has is this the only thing i need to do after the air box mod :dunno

Only the older pre 04 model RSV's are able to accept a chip change however these are specific to exhaust changes, unless you are able to find someone to program a chip to your requirements. It seems most people stay with the standard ecu chip.

You can do an "air box mod", i take it by this you mean fitting either a renegade airbox, evo airbox or homer ewe kit? The bike should still run absolutley fine providing you have carried out the wire snip to the ecu to enable the "deresticted" map. However to obtain the full benefit of a change of exhaust and airbox, a power commander and a custom map set up by a reputable dynocentre is the way to go.

I think were a bit confused with the some say you don't:confused bit,Anyway as to the chip thing as Badger mentioned in a previous thread you are better off staying with the standard chip I was also told by an Aprilia dealer when I was going to get mine re-chipped not to bother when I was prepared to part with my cash.I would say the best thing to do is PM Badger and have a chat with him as he seems to be the man to talk to about these things :thumbup

OK mate, time to put your mind at rest:biggrin

Here is what to do:-

Do either my airbox mod i mailed you or fit a Renegade or Evo airbox mod, also fit a K & N filter at same time as per my pics.

Keep your Akro can on, the chip might be standard it might not, you won't know till you open the ECU box and see what chip is fitted, i could not telll you which code is standard for your bike, so i suggest you phone an Aprilia dealer to confirm the code for the standard chip.

If it is not standard then the bike may well run fine with the chip fitted, my experience is the standard chip is better, most people racing them resorted back to the standard chip.

Now as LEGS stated the chip is fitted up to the 04 models, from 04 on they needed to be remapped, your bike has a chip.

I don't understand what you mean by doing the ECU?

All you need to do in the ECU is check which chip is in there, be very very careful as they are fragile things, especially the pins.

Your bike is a 2000 model is that right? if so it will have the larger air boot into the airbox, this is good as it is not restricted like the later models.

So to cap it all, you want the airbox mod, a filter, your Akro can, standard chip preferably and that should be you.

You could at a later date get a Power Commander fitted and get the bike on a dyno to get it set up, i would only go that route if you are not happy with the way it runs after the mods as this is quite expensive, my 2001R never had a PC fitted as it ran fine for 18k without it being needed.

Do all the above and your gearing and you will be sorted mate:thumbup

Cheers badger :thumbup, stormy seas at the minute with my bike still in the workshop :jack, ill just do the air box and gearing mods for now and thanks for explaining it all m8.

Cant wait to hear the v twin again m8 but will the howl of the air box be as loud as the AKRA :hail, i guess they will be in harmony with each other :thumbup

Yes got to admit the sound that comes from under the tank is a real smile factor:thumbup

Just hope i dont get arrested for a big smile and being out in winter running a bike in :devious, at least its not snowing yet :pirate. Once i get it back in one piece ill be ripping it apart for the mods :thumbup

out on mine this morning to take ot the garage for some 57mm Tb's, slipper clutch, QS and custom map, yeehaawww. My can needs repacking(107DB) so no I couldnt hear the airbox!!. Didnt see anyone else out on two wheels.
Steve mate, make sure you down gear it too, great fun!!

Im going to go with the 16 on the front for a start and see how that feels first, then it will be the ole air box mod followed by the swing arm :thumbup

thats wot I did first , that one tooth off makes a huge difference, you will soon want to go up two at the back also, brings it all in line.although its only good for 166mph then but from stanstill til 150 its **** off a stick!.(you may need a 110 link chain tho) what are you doing with the swingarm?
cheers Andy

Ive seen a 14 tooth front on flea bay for £18 but think this will be too drastic or what do you think :confused,as for the swingarm ive got to drill out the broken studs that the previouse owner so kindly snapped off :jack. It will take me a while but i want the standard hugger back on to stop all the crud messing up the rear :thumbup

common prob withthe swingarm bolts I have one sheared off on mine.
Yeah 14 is too much for the road. 16/44(pre04) is the way to go!!

Thought so, ill stick with the 16 tooth mod... the swigarm will be a pain to do but im going to have a bash at it and then when the studs are out ill replace them with a little copperslip so as not to have anymore trouble. The bike does look much better without the hugger but id still like the option of putting it on through the winter :thumbup

The only other option would be to stick it on with something thats going to hold it :dunno, it would save a lot of trouble or re-tap the arm with new threads in a different place and just grind the old ones flush :thumbup

i only have one thats sheared off so thankfully I dont have to resort to anything else. I cant think of anything that would hold it on

Never mind ck thats the least i can think of at the minute cos ive just got the news :thumbup.. shes ready to be picked up sat pm OMG :woohoo
