Went out this morning, turned key ... and ... nothing AGAIN !! .... Was last used yesterday and yet today the T dont wanna play. 18 month old battery showing 11.7 volts after bein on Optimate since 8 am ... try n turn it over and 9.6 v .... Engine doesnt seem to turn over freely .... Once its going it as always ... Fun ... but whenever that fuel light comes on .. means I gotta switch it off ... The back of the head then spends 5 minutes asking "Will it start again ? " ... Have done the brown connectors ... changed maps, airbox mod ... new plugs etc ... Have I missed something. If not then it looks like she gonna have to go cos really aint enjoying it anymore ....

Is it just a knackered battery then? don`t think 11.7v is enough to turn a twin over. Do you leave the optimate on all the time to monitor the battery condition?

My battery only gets to 11.8v and has no probs starting. Only have a problem if I leave it too long and it dips below 11v.

I stopped using the optimmate as I ended up with about 10 batteries (different bikes) all lined up knackered. My blue "T" never failed to start (no optimate) and sometimes left for just over 2 weeks.I think they are bad. My opinion though.
Get your new battery and charge it then put on the bike , should have no problems.

Defo sounds like the battery mate. My bike has stood for 4 weeks before and fired up ok without being on charger etc.

change the battery as said.... only way to be sure, some will last for 8 years...others 8 months it can be a bit of a lottery, best bet is to try a honda dealer for an st1100 battery, the oe battery is a yuasa item a good quality battery and only around the £50-60 mark, got one on my busa and its still gong strong 6 years on

agree wi Hec oan this one...ah dinnae put much faith in these Optimates etc......ah can leave ma T in winter for a month, in minus 10 conditions, an it aye starts nae probs.....mibbe yer Optimates is secretly buggerred nae daein its job right...sayin that if yer running enough miles tae use a tank up then ye wid think it wid be charged up by that alone.

...So ... dae ye jist do short wee runs, ie jist a few miles or is it a decent run ye dae? If its short runs its poss its nae given enough tae recharge fully so each time yer startin wi a bitty less than before therefore never gettin it back tae full charge.....

Anither thought....how do you actually go aboot startin it up.....routine should be , key tae ON, let the needle swep then return, then straight away, stab the starter button and hold in until engine fuly running. Also if ye switch oan and leave it a minute afore ye actually hit the button it winnae hae the oomph tae satrt her.

Jist a couple o thoughts...

we refuse to fit anything other than yuasa in the workshop as anything else aint worth the hassle
plus anything that comes in with aything else fitted gets an advisory note

Cheers fellas .... Have had my doubts about the permanent Optimate cable draining the battery for a bit now .... that went flying earlier :) ... Rico ... normal run is minimum 25 miles up to tank empty ... Today, when it finally started, was around 60 miles albeit at a slow speed EU Demo .. and as for starting, Key in, sweep, hit button ...

Toad a got ma machine December 2008 it's never been hooked up to any charger but always starts first ask, maybe I'm just lucky wae ma battery?

It can sit for up to 2 months without being started but I do go out for long runs when I can.

If it was me I'd change the battery.

Give it a try, I'd hate to see you get rid of the bike just because of a duff battery.

My bikes been out twice in 5 weeks and on each occaSion started first press

And that without being on Optimate ... which will be applied over winter

you all seem to be overlooking the obvious that someone is stealing your electricity from your bike. I suggest a private investigator and a small trained mouse to keep an eye on it all.

The problem with intelligent chargers usually lies with the connectors...if they are ******, you don't get that required top-up, or desulphating cycles...which I believe can feck yer battery up.
Moral of the tale, always check it's properly connected when you connect....then you can be a smug bastid

Never a mouse mucker it'll nibble at yer wiring.

Well having taken the battery out on Monday and put it on a trickle charge for 14 hours overnight it was registering 12.3 v .... Decided to get a new battery anyway (just in case) ... but need the bike to get to the shop .. 20 miles .. And guess what .. The FECKER wont start again ..... The way this is going I can see this being in the FOR SALE section very soon ...... Maybe I need one of those nice Triumph's or something Japanese .....

As I mentioned earlier, my Tuoldo maxes out @ 11.8 and starts no problem. In fact it starts no problem even when battery is down to 11 so must be something else surely?

Is it on standard relay - some people change to beefier one (mine was done before I had my bike).

Well finally got it started ... (battery charger for half hour) ... got about a mile down the road, turned round and came back again cos it was running as rough as hell .. coughing, popping and very unresponsive .. So have spent the last few hours ripping all the plugs out and cleaning while battery is on charge ... One of em was a nasty gooey mess ... naturally it was the one thats a complete b****rd to get to but it finally came out ... and been replaced :) ... Still gotta get a new battery but its been run and no popping or banging etc .... Was nearly a pleasure to ride ... Reckon it may be an idea to throw some new plugs and filters at it while I'm at it ...

To be continued once new battery acquired and fitted

Why get a new battery though? 12V is more than ample it's clearly something else especially as you have said it's coughing etc.
