Only picked it up Saturday, Millie 2002, 26k miles , rode it home 35 miles no problems, loved every minute. :inlove

Needed a good clean, so out with the Muck off and hose, only used gentle hose pressure.

Also removed the renthal rack.

it has a Datatool 3 fitted which appears to be working OK, or could it be causing a problem ?

Now she wont fire up, engine turns Ok, but not even the slightsest firing, can hear the pumps run :confused.

1 Year old battery , but it had been stood for 6 months, tried again after recharging the battery, still turns but wont fire.

It's currently on an Abba Stand as im waiting for a new C&S.

Any suggestions ?

Did you disturb the tip over switch ?, Kill switches can also fail on these.
I would go with the alarm being at fault though......

WOuld the engine still turn if it is the tip or kill switch ?

Well common sense would say it was fine until you washed it so water ingress must surely be playing a part. The mesh panels below the seat, cover vast majority of the multiplug connectors etc and that would be a vulnerable area.
Also if it didn't start properly then these bikes are really easy to flood and would require the plugs dying out possibly.

Check plugs to see if they are wet and check for spark by earthing a plug against a bolt etc AWAY from the opening in the cylinder head as spent fuel could explode in your face and remove both leads on that cylinder also to prevent this occurrance!

Bare in mind that you've bought a second hand bike and in turn someone elses problems. These bikes aren't unreliable as some people would have you believe. I've got the same bike as you and it doesn't skip a beat! It's been all around Europe and around Scotland several times and thrashed on the local roads and it's never let me down. Poor maintenance causes most of the issues people have.

Let us know what you find as there's plenty of peope on herewill help you out.

Regards Dave

Cheers fellas, will try the tip switch ( where is it ? ) and connectors as soon as I get a chance......keep the ideas coming.

You probably flooded it!
I found if the battery is a bit low it wont fire willingly but it will keep spraying fuel in so it floods the engine.
I got mine to go by unplugging the injectors and winding it over on full throttle to clear the cylinders of fuel.
remember to plug them back in and fire up on fully charged battery.
Jut purchased one of thesehttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motobatt-Motobike-motocycle-battery-For-Aprilia-RSV-1000-Mille-SP-1999-4-QuadFle-/290781202030?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item43b3e9066e&_uhb=1 batteries and they are very very good. Get an optimate or similar too.

Do you get any fault codes under the rider seat right hand side is a single barrel connector, unclipped stick it together and see what comes up it should tell you if there is a fault with tip over sensor... If its 0 or -1 thats fine 0 is normal

I think 1, 0 and -1 are to do with the throttle position sensor. Any other number is a problem. I may be wrong though (I usually am)
Ooooo Slipknot, am I right in thinking Zeke?

Ok, update.

It did fire up, so well pleased...but it then stopped playing.....tried the fault code thing and i get 1, not on any of the listings, any ideas. ?

Waiting for a new battery to arrive.

Initially when i turned it on all i could hear was a relay click nothing else, so tried o clean all the connectors , now i can hear what i thing are the injectors, its a whirring noise for about 1-2 secs....cant test as the battery is flat again.......i checked the TO sensor and all good...what is most likely to stop the injectors starting up ?

Hey zeke.

That noise you describe is the fuel pump priming and you will only hear it when you first turn the ignition on.
As you can appreciate it's very difficult to fault diagnose a bike that you can't get your hands on so as much detail about what's going on will help alot.
For example what did you do that you think might have helped it start. Did it sound smooth when it did start/tick over nice. When it failed on you, how did it fail?? was it running and just stalled? were you riding it and it stalled? if so what were the conditions?
What noise did it make when it cut out or failed to start again?

What does the dash do when the bike dies etc etc

Quick things to check. Shine a torch in the tank...does it have any crud in the bottom? My friend had a rag!! in his from a previous paint job that caused his to keep stalling ha ha!

Pop up the tank and have a look at the fuel lines for kinks, vacuum hoses etc but be careful with the small fittings on some of the hoses as they can be brittle due to age.

Trace the main Negative leads some people call them grounds or earths to where they contact the frame (right hand side near the tank pivot I think?) and engine to see if they are corroded loose.

The battery HAS to be tip top with these bikes or it will NOT start.
If the battery is dodgy like it sounds it will not start easily.
Wait until you get the new battery then try again.

Rode it home after i brought it, ran perfect for 35 miles, parked it up at home. It had been stood for 6 months.

Problems happened after i washed it, guess some thing got wet, my gut feel is it is an electrical problem, as the wiring is in a real state and it looks like Stevie Wonder put the soon to be removed alarm in. :cool2
