Having read quite a few posts on here I am doubting that I have a genuine RSV-R :dunno

Okay it has Ohlins shocks front and back, no steering damper and the wheels are marked "Brembo" and are a sort of grey colour that matches the seat hump, which is removable. :whatsthat

How can I be really sure that I havn't got a frankenstein , especially after the side stand nearly falling off

Hi Kiwi
do you have pics ? normally R models would have a steering damper and OZ wheels ?? what year is it ?

Rawly

has it got a single seat rear sub frame??? and carbon infillls, front mudgaurd etc

looks like an rsv with ohlins added

How can i tell if the the subframe is single seat ?, no carbon infills or front mudguard

Think i've got a frankenstein pig on mu hands ....goes off to cry in a corner

im afraid it looks like an rsv to me with ohlins.

I know the latter ones had carbon fiber inserts in the side vents, a steering damper mounted under the clock, a carbon front mudguard. as well as all the oz wheels etc, The latter ones had little wings on the front fairing by the headlight.

Obv I can't see any of the above on yours.

Don't get too downhearted, I know nothing of the early bikes

Judging by the exhaust hanger having a foot peg i'd guess that it has a twin seat subframe, but even that is not uncommon amongst RSVR's. The front mudguard certainly doesn't look to be carbon fibre as it would be odd for someone to go to the trouble to paint it red, which was the standard RSV colouring. The brake disc carriers are black on yours and they should be gold, although this may well be a result of the wheel swap (not swapped). When you look down the front of the headstock can you see the mounting points for a steering damper :dunno

Can't quite see it clear enough but the hugger doesn't appear to be carbon either. The rear seat plastics appear black in the pictures, and I think that original 2000 RSVR colours were gunmetal, red and black in this instance. I'm sure there must be a way of checking via the frame number but unfortunately I don't know how....LEGS? Spoonz?

Two options really......RSVR that was crashed and the tail unit was changed as were the subframe and wheels, or alternatively RSV that has had the suspension upgraded. Think i'd be inclined to go for the second option all things considered.

Kiwi, take a look in my garage for a standard paint scheme black 2000 RSVR.

Your 2nd option there CP is what i think personally.
Having no dampner is a hint i think, why have all the R gear and not the dampner?
I think maybe upgrade bits on it, but could be well wrong.

So it sounds like I have a standard RSV with Ohlins on, so apart from being a frankenstein it shouldn't cause any problems ?.
The questions I now have are

1. Re do insurance as an RSV Mille ?
2. Add the correct missing bits - very expensive ?
3. Have "words" with the dealer that sold it to me under the trade descriptions act ?
4. Flog it for what I can get for it ?

Got to be honest I am feeling a bit pissed off right now and wish I had'nt got rid of the R1 at least it was genuine........................

How long have you owned the bike for Kiwi? What dealer did you buy through and was the bike advertised and sold as a genuine RSVR?

I'd pay yourself a quick trip down to the local CAB and see what your options are, as if the bike was sold as an RSVR and it isn't, then you quite rightly will have a claim against the sale.

Insurance wise I doubt it will make a huge difference. Adding the "extra" bits will be expensive, and probably too expensive to justify.

I can understand you not feeling to happy about things at the moment, but take a step back and ask yourself, do you like/enjoy the bike?

As an aside, give Southern Cross a call and check to see whether there is any frame number designation for the R as opposed to the standard RSV and then check this against yours.

Good luck and don't get downhearted there squire! :thumbup

I thought they all came with Steering dampers?
The R's just used Ohlins, suspension front and rear, damper and Oz wheels.

mine a RSV mille 99 tricolor with steering damper standard.

have a look at the oil tank. Is it stainless unpainted ?

Is the tank Plastic ?

Don't look like an R to me. just a an RSV with some bling added. sorry

i think spoonz is on the right track, many parts can be taken off or changed but the plastic tank is the real give away.

Ring up an aprilia dealer and quote your VIN number from that they should tell you what model it is.

Is the tank Plastic ? - Nope metal

It seems there may be some ritual burning of Aprilia Motor Bikes tonight. Mine still works fine by the way!!!

I keep in tip tpo condition because I am now to paranoid to ride it.

It makes a great ornament, but its too heavy to lift on the fire place.

Nah **** it, Enjoy it till it dies!!!

Who cares if it's a monster, ask yourself some basic questions.

1. Do you love the sound of it?
2. Do you love riding it?
3. Do you think it looks awesome?
4. Has it let you down yet?

If your answers are yes to questions 1, 2 and 3 then continue starting it, riding it and admiring it.:inlove

If you said no to number 4 then your a lucky bugger and should stop moaning and carry on doing 1, 2 and 3.:doug

Lets face it, unreliability is an issue!
