This is exactly what I mean. Snow isn't a new phenomena in Britain, we get it every year, yet every time it snows you'd think we were being attacked.
There's no mystery. In countries where the average temp is below zero for weeks on end, governments budget a considerable amount to keep transport infrastucture functioning, and individuals have to master the conditions. That's why in many parts of the world snow chains are normal, but in the UK it thaws so quickly they'd just **** the roads up even more, not something bikers would welcome. Plus, the very fact that it does thaw/freeze/thaw means you get very unpredictable conditions, in some ways its a more complex scenario than Canada or wherever because its less predictable.
As with everything else, its all down to money. I'm sure the council/highways agency would be very happy to grit entire regions if the public were prepared to foot the bill. Equally there could be legislation which ensured that cars were better equipped tyre wise when the temp fell below freezing with a revision of the test to include skid pans and so on. The question remains: would people be prepared to pay for all that?
