hi, my name's mark. just got myself an 01 mille the other week which seemed fine when i checked it, but today it just made a spinning noise when i tried to start it, so i'm assuming the sprag's on the way out.:bawling

so, if you don't mind me asking a few questions so soon after joining.
what size bolt is the crankshaft locking bolt? or is it best to just buy the
proper aprilia job.
also, when doing the sprag job is there any other special tools needed apart from the flywheel puller and the locking bolt?
i've read through most of the threads on it , just double checking before i start ordering stuff.

cheers guys.:thumbup

Hi Mark

Welcome mate :thumbup

Cant help you too much there, just read up and some more guys will help.

I know you can use the cheaper BMW sprag and save.

Cheers Pete

Welcome to the forum mate, sad to hear sprags fragged already, no chance of any recourse with the seller as it's gonna be costly?

Here's a guide for you:

sorry to hear about your sprag mark, try and get the seller to contribute, you have only had bike a week :dowhat

yeah, suppose i could try the seller, but it was a private sale so i doubt he'll
be much help. worth a try though.

cheers for the guide amb67 :thumbup much appreciated mate.

when i bought mine had it 3 days and the battery went kaput, told the seller and he offerd to buy me a new one. its how you speak to him dont give him **** just explain what happend and ask him if he will help out with the cost :devious

:thumbup nice one vinny. hopefully if he's as nice as the guy you bought yours off, i might be in luck.

i'll ring him tomorrow and let you know.

If it's making a spinning noise i'd be inclined to check the battery condition and starter relay first.

Now if you'd said "My bike sounds like there are lots of metal things banging together like spanners in a washing machine......"

could it just be that then? there's no spanners in a washing machine noise, lol, just a fast spinning noise, but the engine isn't trying to turn over.

the battery should be o.k. it's a bosch ytx14-bs that was in my speed triple.:thumbup

One way to find out squire. Take the battery off and get it fully charged and put it back on. A cheaper start than ordering sprag parts ;)

The battery on an RSV needs to be fully charged or else there won't be enough get up and go to get her to get up and go if you catch my drift. How long had the battery been in your speed triple for?

it had been in about 6 months, but it has taken a bit of abuse, the speed triple
had starting problems aswell, lol, so it was flattened and charged quite a few times.

In which case my good man i'd be going and buying a new battery and fully charging it first to see how much of a difference it makes ;) Go for a YTZ14BS if you can. Much better on the CCA's

well i just tried to start it then, and it started fine, no spinning noise, but
the rubber boots over the starter solenoid connectors look a bit melted:confused
the battery was on 12.3 and then 14.2 with the engine running, so i'm assuming that's o.k.?
am i right in thinking if it was the sprag the noise would happen all the time, not just now and then? or could it still be the sprag?

Sounds to me like your battery is just too low squire, 12.3 is not fully charged. Don't wish on a sprag ;) Unless you want to of course, in which case keep trying to start it with a weak battery and you will have a self fulfilling prophecy! :doh

If it was the sprag, you'd know about it, it makes some god awful noises to the extent you'll swear something has just tried smashing it's way out of the engine.

Keep smiling :D

Tip, cold start lever on full, no throttle, one push of the button for no more than a couple of seconds. It should kick immediately with a good battery. If it doesn't, then there is every chance your battery hasn't got the fire power. As you'll read elsewhere, unless you use your bike everyday, you need to keep the battery charged via an optimate or the likes. There is a permanent power source to the clocks which takes a small drain from the battery, much in the same way alarms do.

Other tip - don't start the bike for the fun of it too often as the battery takes a beating to get the bike started and will need a good 10 minute run to replace the lost charge.
