bit of a strange one,

had the bike 5 months now, no major problems, ( that weren't easily solved ),

however :crazy the bike isn't used daily, and ive had issues with starting and a flat battery, i bought an Oxford Oximiser 900 and when it was plugged into the bike never had an issue, it started first time, but when it hadn't been on charge it was getting harder and harder to start,

so i fitted a new battery, everything was bang on, started first time every time, i am now noticing when i come to start the bike, it cranks over as though its gonna start, for about 2/3 seconds then just goes dead, all the dash goes blank, try starting it again straight away and it fires first time,

its as though theres not enough juice in the battery, but it always fires straight away on the second try, :dunno just to add it only does this when the charger has not been on, and the bike has been left for a day without starting, and once started and used, it starts first time for the rest of the day,

i know it all seems to point to the battery, but with it only been a month old, i just find it strange, are these bikes heavy going on batteries,

i think the culprit is the datatool alarm, sapping the battery ( any thoughts on this )

has anyone else come across this, its an 2006 Gen2,

thank ya,

Could be the alarm. I used to put mine in service mode when in the garage, wether it made any difference I don't know.
Most of the time it was on the optimate, but there were times it stood for a week and was ok. Battery was 5/6 yrs old. It is possible you have a duff battery tho'

Hi Chris,
How long are you talking about leaving it off the charger with the alarm on? Depending on the age / model of alarm (I think the current draw on modern alarms is better than it used to be) but if it's more than a few days I wouldn't discount the alarm taking the edge off the battery.
Can you remove it? That would be my first option and just eliminate the possibility as alarms are a royal pain in the arse.

2 to 3 days off the charger with the alarm on, and it wont start, 1 to 2 days and it'll start with a stutter, the alarm was fitted when the bike was new in 2006, I have the receipt but no instructions, its a datatool s4, im gonna have a search for some destructions for it on the tinterweb,

theres a blade fuse under the seat that kills the red l.e.d for the alarm, but it also interferes with the dash display when removed, it just shows service message, will have to trace the wiring to see what sort of job it is to remove,

had a couple of hours after work on the bike, and think ive successfully removed the alarm,

time will tell

Hi Chris,

Hopefully it is now sorted. I had a series 3 datatool on a fireblade many years back and three and it would struggle to start and that wasa four cyclinder with small pistons so could imagine a big twin would also struggle.

Fingers crossed for you pal

Hi Chris I had a Datatool alarm on a 05 Fazer 1000 it would go of any time and melted 2 of my indicators
cost me £70 to have it taken of by a trained Datatool alarm fitter. Hope you have removed it ok :thumbup

well bike started first time this morning, and no issues getting to work,

basically i disconnected the battery and traced all the wires, not all the available ones had been connected so i think ive been lucky, ive cut them and reconnected all original wires, using solder and heat shrink,
the alarm im leaving in situ, ive sealed all the ends of the wires to stop water ingress, so it can be re connected if needed,

hopefully its sorted :thumbup
