i know its an old thread but picked my 2004 up on saterday with 16k on it (road in the rain all day) noticed on sunday its now showing 1900 been to my dealers (where i baught her) and they said there is jack they can do they all do it? but its waranted for 3 months i'll look a twit when i come to sell her on what do you peeps think i should do? bearing in mind shouldnt they restore it under waranty?
Most dealers only offer a limited (usually non-consumable) mechanical warranty - check the details of their 'guarantee' ...but I doubt it'll be covered to be honest - your bike still 'works'.
i just checked service manual and it was like that when they did there pre purchase service

it happens to pre-04 models too, I did over 65k on my 02 mille when it reset at the petrol station after refueling..bizarre.

CK, pre 2003.5 RSVs only reset to 00000 when they reached 99999 kilometers or 62137 miles as they're not programmed for a 6th digit on the display
As for the 2003.5 and 2004 model RSVR and Factory, it's a lottery to what mileages they've actually done unless owners have recorded the mileage when they've reset.
I was under the impression the mileage reset only happened once on 04 bikes as it was part of the dealer set up from new to reset the bikes to 00000. If this wasn't done, then it happened when the bike's battery was disconnected for the first time which could be in X number of miles time.
