Last night in the traffic while on idle I have noticed the headlight brightness was increasing and decreasing. Is it something to worry about like regulator/rectifier? Battery is new

I hope people say its ok cos when I started mine last night and revved it I noticed that my dash was getting brighter.

i had the same thing on one of my old aprilias if it happens to my T i will sell it as fast as i can it cost me a fookin fortune to put right sorry but both you bikes are fooked

I had an old Honda which did that and it was the reg/rec which was one its way out.

I've also noticed weird charging problem - bike shows 14V+ while cold then gradually in 30min. of riding goes down to 12V (lights flickering, no charge). Is it possible if the stator is fried to show good charging on cold? Will be testing stator voltage output tomorrow. Also could you explain where I can find the second brown connector if there is one? Between the V shape of the engine? RR side brown connector looks fine.

I'm a bit confused with Joe's instructions. I can't see the second connector there. Same on my bike, spent the day looking for it. I might have only one connector. Readings from 3 yellow wires are small: 3V,13V,13V

Where are you checking the output voltage?
If you are checking at the alternator end you should be getting around 70v at 4,000 rpm.And yep,not all bikes have the second connector.

if you take your readings across the yellows, y1 to y2, y2 to y3 etc you should get in the region of 50-60 Volts A/C at 4000rpm.
All three readings should be about the same, give or take a few volts.
Anything lower would indicate your stator has taken a dump.

Brown connectors, there are usually 2 on pre 2007 bikes, one is obvious to spot, but the other is tucked well away back up into the engine vee. The reason there's two, is because aprilia decided to use left over stators from another product line that had shorter wiring. They solved the problem by using a little 'extension' lead in there, which introduced a second connector.

Make sure your meter is on Volts A/C when you take your reading.

Readings above I took across the yellows the same way you have described, but strangely non of the readings exceeds 14V. I'm hoping is that second connection and not the stator problem (naive).

Do remember to check you've got your meter set correctly.
Also, you need to check out that you haven't got a ****** connection in a second bron connector that you've not located.
Failing that, I'm afraid that it's new stator time chap.

On the bright side, it's a fairly easy job to swap out. I had mine rewound, istr about £110 + gasket £20 + oil £45 + filter + £8.

I recon your bike and mine were separated at birth eh?

It's not the stator that's the issue, the problem lies with the rotor/stator miss-match. To get an effective fix, you need to swap them both.
Leave a post for mini me on AF1, he'll give more details.
Also, the reg/rectifier doesn't help either. Look at series regulators, they give the stator a much easier time.

Will do, thank you for advise! This morning while cold have checked the charging V on the battery terminals and it was showing 14V and it stays this way for about 5 miles in a slow traffic and then drops bit by bit to a no charging 12V

Found the same pattern on AF1 forum > RSV1000 Mille, Mille R, and Mille SP (1998-2003)

'I recently decided to upgrade/replace my voltage regulator/rectifier. I had been noticing that my voltages would read fine at idle and at 4krpm when the bike was just started, but after 20-30 minutes of riding, the voltage readings at idle and at 4krpm would decline significantly, so much so that my voltage reading at idle, with the headlight on and the fans running, would be 11.8-12.3 volts (please note the voltage readings I quote are corrected for error, as my bike's voltage regulator reads 0.5 volts low.)'

Problem gone, have a normal charge numbers at the battery for few days now and the lights stays bright and not flickering. How strange is that? :banghead

There IS a God!

It would appear you have a crappy connection somwhere in the charging circuit. Chances are, you've got yourself a temporary fix by playing around with the connectors.

If it were me, I'd be pulling it apart again, and cleaning them up, then sealing with a dollop of dilectric grease for good measure.

Started again - no charge (( but now it doesn't charge even at start-up when cold. Will be pulling apart and checking bit by bit.

Remove those crappy plugs before they catch fire and put inline crimps in solves a lot of problems
