Has anyone had a problem that sounds similar to this

V

V_senna

Rode it for 1/2 hours, turn it off, then 2 mins later go to start, and wont turn out, flat battery type of sound.

Now if I leave the bike for 10 minutes and let it cool down, I go to start it, and it fires straight up?

What is going on? Why does it only start when cold?

Battery problems !! letting it cold down as u say,, lets the battery regarate (spelling) !
Which gives it the power to turn the bike over again !

Need to check , its , charging and for earth leaks !

yeah thats what I thought, but I asked a garage, and he also mentioned Earth leaks, only where do you start with trying to find a short in the circuit or missing earth???????

a friend on mine was having issues with his

put a brand new battery on, rode for 2 hours, had a break and then wouldn't start
had this on short journeys aswell and then somedays was fine

Turns out it wasn't charging from the tests done

Best place to start is the battery terminals then to the starter solenoid, then all frame and engine earth points.

Is the engine temp normal during running?

Just a thought but could be heat soak causing the engine or starter solenoid to partially seize.

It runs at about 80c when fully warmed up, oh this weekend is going to be so much fun :(

That's about the normal running temp so I would check the charge rate.

If the charge rate is fine then it has to be a duff battery cell or poor earth point.

Nice one, i'll have a go tomorrow after work, just remembered I need to do a spark plugs change too lol...

It is very common for the battery terminals to become loose so check them first before anything else.

alright bud you know when you say its warm and it doesnt start and when trying it makes a flat battery sound, do you only try to start it once then leave for 10 mins or do you give it a few trys before leaving it for 10 mins?

The reason i ask is my starter relay/regulator/solenoid which ever ya want to call it is fubared and once trying when warm i to get the flat battery sympton but when trying again it pretty much fires up, if this is the case then get a yammy relay i can find the code for you if needed buddy as i brought one a few weeks ago (still havent fitted it lol)
The cost is about £29.00 depending on where ya go cheaper fix then a new battery

I have a friend with an RC51 with the same problem. When he talked to a tech about it , he was told that there may be some faulty wiring that when the engine gets hot causes expansion. When the engine cools, the wires create a better contact, and the bike starts. I'm not sure how you would trouble shoot this other than go for a run, get the bike good and hot, then shut it off and try to recreate problem. Then get your electrical testing equip and trouble shoot the wiring from the battery on back. Good luck!! If you find something out, please post so I can tell my friend (even though it is a Honda!!).

Borrow a battery you know is good and try it, the solenoid switch may be on it's way out if you have been trying to start with a slow battery, first things i would do is try a good battery and a good solenoid on it, in fact buy the yamaha one anyway, so much better:thumbup

I think I found something related, if I turn the lights on, one of the brake lights come on, the other one is fine, but the left one is always on brake light and never on just normal tail light.

Sorry to ask but the tail lamp bulbs are in the right way?

If yes:

Will certainly be an earthing problem.

Check the earth points for all your lights, starting at the brake light one that is coming on when you turn on your sidelights only.

Look for green terminals, rust, water in the lamps etc....

Let us know what you find

God I miss being a hands on techie!!!

Haha I may have put the bulb in the wrong way, I thought there was only 1 way of doing it?

Don't worry you're not the first and won't be the last.

Was it charging OK then?

Yes everything else seems fine, rode it to and from work, both times with dipped beam on, turned it off after the ride, and left it 10 seconds, went to start it again while its still hot, and it fires up no problem, good ole' italian electrics aye :D

By the way I checked the Regulator/Rectifier, and its a suzuki one??? as my mate has a TLR and they look identical?

Only ever seen one vehicle with worse electrics than an Aprilia and that was a 1978 Skoda Estelle.

Was working as a panelbeater at the time and had to do a bit of rewiring due to accident damage to the loom. When I peeled off the loom tape all the fooking wires were split but worst of all they were all green.

Took me hours to repair that loom.
