i know people say they wish they knew earlier... so giving a heads up if it fails again !! :biggrin

ideally though id like too keep her... when she starts she as sweet as a nut !! :doug

basic background... i keep it on the road... no garage... no cover incase it gets windy... previous & other peoples bikes have been blown over with covers on... its like tornando alley... so constantly open to the elements... no way to keep connected to a optimate !! :thumbdown

basically bike ran superb then just stopped working one day... turned out the fuel pump pipe in the tank split... got it replaced... perfect again !! :doug

2 weeks later... after riding around constantly upto sunday... bike failed to start next day on monday morning... was very very cold... took to Southern Cross... they replaced flooded plugs & it started !! :doug

picked it up thurs... ran fine till sat then didnt use on sunday... come mon morning to go to work... wouldnt start !!

took to Southern Cross... plugs flooded... cleaned & dried... recharged battery... fine... picked it up fri... used sat... ran perfect... come mon morning & you guessed it... my boss is a biker & very understanding as its a Aprilia !! :biggrin

Southern Cross has just fixed it again... they say its got a weak charging system & i need a new R&R... so bought one off E-Bay for £40... its a 04 model as these come with a extra 'battery condition' wire which detects when its weak & needs extra ooomph... apparentley !! :dunno

iv also bought the Yam solenoid & YTZ14BS battery to be fitted tomorrow so hoping all my woes will be over !! :eatcorn

any other ideas that it might be or i could modify... im also going to do the R&R connector mods too !! :devious

otherwise... £1500 squids... lol !! :rant

just to be fair though... in its defence... iv had a CBR600 & VFR750 that the R&R failed on... & my GSF6 used to hate very cold mornings for no apparent reason... so its not just because its a Aprilia... lol !! :inlove

i hoping it dont start, im first in line at £1500...lol..bikes u got to love em

you do use the correct procedure when starting?

do not touch the throttle, pull cold start lever back...and away she goes or am i just lucky?:dunno

Have you asked Southern Cross to check and balance the throttle bodies and check the cold start mechanism? Flooding that often doesn't sound just like low battery charge to me.

Your other option is to get a quick release set up on the seat (although I still say it's as easy to do it conventially) and whip the battery out each night and pop it on an optimate overnight. It will take five minutes tops once you are in the swing of it. Handy theft deterrent as well if some scrote did think they could get it started ;) Batteries don't like cold mornings, i've worked in Transport all my life and the trucks even with their huge batteries and double ups can be a pig to start. If you had the battery indoors overnight not only would it be charged, but also warm which equals better chemical reaction in the battery.

Best of luck :thumbup

yep... had TB's & TPS sorted !! :thumbup

i think it floods due to it not starting the 1st time & then i keep trying in vain another 3-4 times with 1 min rest between each one !! :dunno

i basically switch it on... let the dials do their thing & fuel pump prime... then cold idle fully back... & normally... BOOM... starts 1st push of the button... then bring cold idle lever back to around 2500rpms... take locks off... stick helmet & gloves on... wait till the 'COLD' disappears... & the temp read 40 degrees then flick the cold idle off completely... she thens just purrs... no hestitations or anything !? :inlove

when i bring the lever back i can see the throttle handle move slightly... & starts @ around 4000rpms when started !? :dunno

does the 'wide open' throttle start work on these Aprilias for clearing out the unspent fuel or is it just a myth !? :confused

Hi all. Newbie here but in my line of work see plenty of flooded vehicles!
If it floods the wide open throttle works as this opens the throttle butterflys and allows air in go purge the cylinders but is hard work on startermotor as it needs a lot of cranking to clear!
If you're going to use this method ensure you knock off fast idle as this also enrichens the intake charge.
Don't ask me why (and I'm sure someone will disprove it!! ) but most of the vehicles that suffer flooding use supermarket fuels, a change to branded fuel usually sorts the issue??????strange but true.
Anyhow off to pick up my rsvr now, finally converters to the dark side!

sounds like you are using correct technique, sometimes when my bike hasn't been used for a few days and it's a very cold morning i find that when i press the starter nothing appears to happen for half a second or so.
i just keep my thumb on the starter button and then she fires up on first turn, it feels as if the starter is just gathering up the energy to turn her over and hasn't woken up yet, like the rider. i imagine that taking my thumb off the starter before she fires would result in a no start/ battered sprag.

i did also here this relating to car batteries but it will be the same for bikes.
on very cold mornings leave the side lights on for a few mins, this draws some current and actually warms up the battery a few degrees helping it turn over the starter.
logic sounds good to me as the extra heat in the battery negates the extra negligible load when starting (or i guess toy could turn the lights off when starting)
technical spod please confirm if this is an urban myth

heard a lot of problems with supermarket fuel never new it could cause flooding....lucky i only run decent stuff in my bike then.
anyway welcome to the site....enjoy your new bike:thumbup

I did hear somewhere that the supermarkets generally buy the contents of the storage '' emergency'' tanks as they near the end of their allowed storage period before it starts detoriorating. The theory is that as they sell it on so quickly due to their discounted price it never actually has time to '' go off'' due to evaporation :dunno

I'm sure there must be someone on here working in the petrochemical industry who can shed some wisdom one way or the other.

have only used 3 petrol stations... & all Shell... but only cos they are local at the beginning/middle/end of my 8 mile eachway commute... lol !! :biggrin

anyways... im picking her up on monday... & il see how it goes... iv already got my eye on a cheap winter hack VFR750 if it fails again !! :angry

I'm yet to see discounted prices at the supermarkets (yeah I know they will give you a discount if you buy groceries from em - but its still expensive considering its the dregs). I reckon thier markup is way more than the service stations.

RSV-Twin, why don't you do the yammy starter solonoid mod and the reg/rec wiring mod and see if that cures it - cost will be solonoid and if you're still disheartened you can sell it on for the same money again - so no loss :thumbup

Perhaps it's different in France but round here generally the supermarkets are 2-3 p per litre cheaper than filling stations unless the ones down the road want to get into a pricecutting war.

Our local Morrisons is usually at least 3p per litre at the pump ( plus the loyalty card 1p ish ) cheaper than the stations nearer home.

The supermarket fuel is cheaper cos they dont spend the extra on detergents, octane improvers and the like.

Might want to try some twin tip platinum plugs and 97 suoer unleaded and see if it helps the starting

When tweeking bikes, i have always run on 97 and sometimes still have needed to add a octane booster to avoid poor starting/running and detonation at high revs/load.

I ran my rsv on 97 as it is a twin, and after all the hassles i had on my super tenere, found this sorted loads of its problems out, so when i got the ape, went straight onto it as i could well do without the hassles i had previously had.

Might also be a wise move to try another companies fuel, you might have a dodgy supplier to your local shell garage.

Ian, I meant the uk - my local tescos when I waqs there a few weeks ago was charging exacly the same as the service stations.

Deacs :thumbup

Ah,probably just depends on what the local competition is then.

My Tesco at the end of the road doesn't do petrol as the store is located right behind a multifranchise garage who's owners virtually control the town, and they already had a filling station out front.

The next Tesco down the road (13 miles) has never struck me as cheap though.

Morrisons & Sainsburys 4 miles in the opposite direction are always 3-4p cheaper than all but the Shell station midway between which always matches them.

But with a Morrisons fuel card you get points & £5 vouchers back on top of the lower pump price.

Still bloody overpriced though!

brown connectors were totally melted together !!

all now hard wired... so fingers crossed its sorted now !! :dowhat

:biggrin

same thing again this morning... would'nt start... i know its got a clock but how the fook does it know its a Monday morning !? :rant

has been working fine for 2 weeks... even stuck it on the dyno on sat... didnt ride it sunday due to ****** weather... & would'nt start this morning... soooooooooooo... its going for £1500 no offers !!

once she runs she's **** of the shovel... i have reciepts for all work done (£'s)... will endeavor to get her going again for the sale !! :thumbup

Shame, be a bargain for someone though, even if it needs a new alternator and v/r.

Best price I've seen one for, even my 2003 was £1700, but that was with new tyres, new Scorpion can, and new afam chain and Reynolds sprockets just put on prior to sale.

I can see how you could get disheartened with the hassle and want something more reliable,it must seem never ending when you keep having niggles with it, I have an Audi car that suffers like that to.
