I think I follow you, all my Gilles stuff was stainless anyhoo.
The little doo/da that goes around the back of the swing arm only needs to be tight enough to stop them falling off when the spindle is removed, they don't do anything once the spindle is torqued up. you are supposed to set it to a 'just fit' with a locknut either side of it and a csk s/s hex bolt.
