Hi guys,
I just trying to judge how many V4's have had problems with their gearboxes. In brief I was going down the M3 lucky I was slowing down to 60 ish for my junction and went to change down when all hell broke loose, could not find any gear even neutral, I pulled the clutch in still the rear wheel was engaged......leave a big ****** down the road and in me pants I managed to get on to the hard shoulder. I sent my baby up to Griff at Aprilia Performance, bad news I'm afraid destroyed the gearbox and clutch etc, repair bill £3000 ish . The Bike has only done 7010 miles, I've only done 700 on it !!! Told the Aprilia dealership where I bought the bike they are getting back to me tomorrow. ....I'm not holding out alot of hope with them. Next step Aprilia UK, but I've been told there're not much better and because it is out of warranty they won't help but saying there gearbox only doing 7000 miles !!! I'm not going to let this go press is the following step if I don't get help with this bill.....rant over sorry guys
Anyone one in the forum have any similar problems/experience. Thanks for your time

That sucks big time Barty, not sure on the reliability of these V4's, quite a few issues raising their ugly heads on these forums. Good luck anyway Mate.

Cheers Stampy, yeah I know what you mean this is my 3rd major problem with my bike !!! Hopefully I'll get it all sorted

Crikey that's not good, and you had no warning of the impending doom either  hope you get it sorted and it not gonna cost you :thumbup

Cheers Blade and nope nothing at all completely out of the blue ...... in hindsight I was extremely lucky 15 secs before I had been been in 3 figures !!! I just wanted to say in my last post and forgot, that I'm going to raise a stink on this and try my best to get Aprilia UK to look in to this gear box issue on pre 2013 models. I would hate to see anyone else have the same issue but with a worse outcome. Anyway thanks buddy ....still gotten meet up this summer for a ride out

I feel for you Barty, that was potentially a really nasty moment and as you say you were lucky.

It's no wonder Aprilia sell less and less bikes as their attitude to customer service appears to stink.

I love my Gen 2 to bits but I accept it's my responsibility to look after it and maintain it and I trust myself (or Griff) to do just that. But would I hand over a major chunk of my annual salary to Aprilia to not give a **** about me? NO I F*&KING WOULDN'T

I know Rizla had a problem with his gearbox, I think it was third gear that went awol.

What a bummer mucker, hope you get a result soon.

Keep us informed about what actually happened as seems odd it locked the rear wheel up even with the clutch pulled in ???

I know Blade it really shocked me that when I pulled the clutch in it was still in gear. .....when I got the bike picked you to go up to Griff I still couldn't find any gear or neutral .....the neutral light shows its in but it's all locked up, Griff said it was like the gearbox just exploded !!! I will get more details and photos and post them here

Ian?

Yes mine has exploded, well not exploded but needed half of it replaced.

Steve on the Aprilia performance facebook group :thumbup

The yellow ones eat gearboxes because of the additional power they have over the boring colours :lol

Barty, sorry to hear that and glad you survived without more than a shock to the system and gearbox collateral. Your dead right pushing Aprilia on this for an investigation and compensation as a min.

Re.
I know Blade it really shocked me that when I pulled the clutch in it was still in gear...

So how can that happen???
- Given the clutch sits between the front sprocket drive shaft and the gearbox the only way I can see that happening is if gearbox debris jammed the clutch. Is that possible?

Well yes it is because the clutch is between the engine and gearbox not the wheel and gearbox,it must have been pretty catastrophic to lock/jam it solid sounds like something broke or its selected two gears at the same time hence locking it up ???

Thanks Paul D I will get to the bottom of this and make a big stink if I have to, it's not fair we pay are hard earned money for the bike only to be left high and dry by Aprilia. ......I have tried calling today some 30 times !!! I know the lyrics to Van Halen's Jump off by heart now lol then after 2 mins ish you get cut off

Check out:
The Sale of Goods Act 1979.
You are covered.

Go speak to a brief.
May cost you a few £££
But they should be able to sort it with no worries.

Tifa ..... stunning buddy I'll go read now, might go to the CAB ....Citizens Advice Bureau for help

Blade,
Well yes it is because the clutch is between the engine and gearbox not the wheel and gearbox,

Thanks for the correction. Doh... I knew that for most of my life... Must have been an mental block! :banghead

Re. The Sale of Goods Act 1979

Barty, Tiffas spot on.

Do some web research, and be armed to make reference to the act when you contact Aprilia, it usually gets people attention fast!

Also the EU Warranty Directive may well apply. Under it goods must be fit for purpose, and if they have any inherent design faults which manifest themselves unduly early, you have the right to make a claim under trading standards laws (which implement the warranty directive).

Being out of manufacturers original warranty doesn't exonerate any dealer from the wider obligations of this legislation.

You local trading standards office can give you free advice if you contact them.
