Fork service.....D.I.Y??????

Alright folks, well after the disasterous start to the day (see my earlier thread, spat the dummy out big time!!!), it ended up great!! Sun was out, roads relativley quiet and an indicated 158mph (on private road .......:devious). My new Wilbers shock working amazingly well!!! However........what i have now noticed is that, with rear end working awesomely it has highlighted the harshness of the front forks!!

So.....can you recommend what oil (and how much) i'll need, the rough procedure and tools required to do the job, and lastly..............WILL I BE ABLE TO DO IT MYSELF?????????? I'm absolutely no mechanic but am relatively competent at following instructions if it were an easy(ish) job.

Andi, the manual has the procedure down to a tee and if you follow that you'll be fine. :thumbup

I used Silkolene Pro RSF 5W and have to admit that my forks are silky smooth in operation.

You will need a good vice with soft grip jaws and a buddy to help you out. Preferably a mechanic buddy too. :devious

I am only 70Kg fully kitted up and my springs measurements fell well within tolerance so I just refitted them.

Make sure that you remove all the valves etc... and give them a good flush out with some petrol. You'll be surprised how much crap will be in them.

If your in doubt as to your capabilities best get them shipped to a local specialist for overhaul.

If i'm being honest mate, i think it'll be a bit beyond me! I'll start looking around and see who can do a ride in ride out service..................:thumbup

How do you manage to swing the leg over the seat ? The last time I was 70Kg I was 4 Foot 11

Definitely get the correct size socket to take the fork caps off, as I didn't and rounding took place (the anodized red caps).

Then I went and bought a socket. :angry

LOL I'm only 5' 10" so I struggle to touch the floor when sat on the bike, I do tend to scuff the rear seat cover too as I throw my leg over. :doug

Im gonna leave it my forks for when Al comes over.
