nah mate

everything i have read (including the manual for the 00-03 model) says to assemble the fork leg slider, stand vertical, fill with oil to the correct level, then fit the spacer and spring.
but please prove me wrong dude, as i'm always willing to learn new tricks

i've just re-valved mine and got back from setting them up. front end it mega now, nice and soft with plenty of feedback, holds its line etc. i'm very pleased, and i set the air-gap without the spring and spacer fitted.

Your spot on Kev, spring out fill and level off the oil with the required air gap and then rebuild. :thumbup

Just :rtfm

(That's for the Showa forks anyhow)

Right...........manual says nothing about filling fork with oil .....THEN fit spring and coupling

Just fill with oil THEN fit Coupling......but looking at a vid it shows oil, then spring and coupling (though not aprilia bike)

So what is it......and why dont the stupid manual say fit spring and coupling after fliing with oil

Oh well gives me something to do again tomorrow lol

i suppose if your filling by volume then it wont matter if the spring is in or not.

but the agreed method for forks is to fill, set the air-gap, then fit spacers and springs etc.

if you fill by volume, your not going to be sure if the damper is bled or not, or if there is any old fluid left inside etc.

it could just be the Italian/English translation thats causing confusion, i'll look at the 04> manual and see what it's saying.

off to a stoopid aloooween party now:thumbdown :whocares

re read the manual for 2004 rsvr

1, Fit the lower spacer and washer
2, Install the fork spring
3, Fill the fork with oil so all the air is vented
4, Fit the spring coupling

End of the section says

Oil capacity 520 ml +/- 25ml
Oil level 118 mm +/- 2 mm from slider edge

Note
In order to obtain a correct measurement of the oil level, the slider must be perfectly vertical. The oil level must be the same for both tubes

NO WHERE in the manual does it say check the level without spring ?????

I'm confused now.....some say check air gap without spring....others say with spring ????

AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH

had a quick look at the later manual, and this is from the section
5.2.4. CHANGING THE FORK FLUID

bottom of page 174
DRAIN OIL INTO A CONTAINER AND REMOVE SPRING
page 175
FILL THE FORK SO THAT ANY AIR INSIDE IT IS VENTED
FIT THE SPRING COUPLING

it does actually miss out putting the spring back in, and if you read further on regarding the dust seal replacement it does state that the spring goes in before the fluid.

can't see why they would change the procedure as i think it's the same showa fork as the earlier model.

to me it's wrong, you fill with fluid, set the correct level, then add the spacer and spring etc :biggrin

i spent a long time researching, and found a procedure that works for me. i bet even ohlins have a different way of doing things to showa and kyb and the rest etc. have a read through the earlier manual and see if that helps any?

hopefully thats now made it a clear as mud for you :thumbup

The 2004 manual aint very clear on it at all really

Guy on the AF1 forum looked at the Haines manual and it says, oil then spring ....cant be that far out but will redo it tomorrow anyway to be sure lol

not wrong there mate

kept reading after the last post, even the ohlins section seems all to ****:dunno

if your really in doubt, speak to a suspension expert. i emailed a bloke in york, reactive suspension, he always replied and was very helpfull when i was looking at rebuilding a scruffy rear shock.

just found this video where the bloke just does a fluid change, this might be all you need matey.
