Flywheel trouble

Hi,

A local mechanic, recommended too, is doing my sprag clutch for me.

He just called to say he cant get the flywheel off my 04 RSV Mille.

He has broken one wheel puller and bend another one, a snap-on, and bent some other tools too.

He doesnt have any torches or heat at his place so hasnt tried that and he apparantly doesnt want to use heat.

Is there any othre way to get the flywheel off ?

Otherwise I will have to take it to some other garage to see if they can put some heat on it to get it released.

Has anyone else had such a hassle ??

Cheers, George.

Needs heat or you will struggle to get it off without damage. Even with heat it is stubborn as the lock fluid they use is mega strong. You MUST use similar strength locking fluid when refitting it too.

As spoonz said, you need a lot of heat and make sure he uses locktite 648 to re fit it.

I'd be a bit concerned that a so called professional hasn't got heat available, even a £5 butane torch.

I used a hot air gun for paint stipping just heat the centre boss ,and wait till you here the crack when it does go ! thought I'd broke it lol

I'd take my bike away from the clown and run a mile - if he's buggered up tools trying to get it off I shudder to think what he's doing to the crank :puke

get it away from him for your bikes sake! he sounds like a grease monkey not a mechanic!!

OMF.

After waiting 2 weeks to get my bike into the local shop, they tell me they cant actually do the bike today then tell me they think they will damage it when applying heat to it and a new one will cost £300. The used to be the local Aprillia dealers and said they have broken quite a few.

At this point I am very concerned for my bike.

I have need seem any posts on here where a damaged flywheel has been mentioned.

HELP.

Ahhh the Granite city know it well , shame your not nearer to me ( Northamptonshire ) I could have helped you do it no problem .
I use an electric hot air paint stripper gun to heat the centre boss of the flywheel , while using the fly wheel puller on it ,
Its not difficult really , just need the flywheel boss too expand to break the loctite seal
talk you through it over the phone if you wanted ?
I've actually used a lorry wheel stud from a DAF truck as a puller lol

Eddie

They wouldn't fill me with too much confidence i have to say

The only damage i have ever heard of is stripped threads caused by using a puller and no heat. what are they scared of, melting it !!

Now I am really worried if they have damaged so many in the past.

I dont have a wheel puller but am sure I could get hold of a heat gun or some form of portable heat source if I tried.

How much will a wheel puller cost me ? If I am going to have to pay em £75 to take this off, I may as well have a go at it myself hey ???

Am so fed up with this whole damn mess tho.

Hi Eddie,

Thats the link I sent to the guy who started the work and couldnt get the flywheel off.

I really am tempted just to try it myself, at least if I break it then I have nobody else to blame and I save £75 which is a quarter the price of the flywheel. So only £225 left to find.

Does anyone have the spec of wheel puller I will need to do this job properly ??

Maybe I could borrow one from one of the local bikers of get one form the local tools shop.

not that ive done this myself (yet) but i recon if you use a hot torch to the centre boss of the flywheel not anywhere else then use a puller to take up slack then a good whack on the end of the puller with a hammer should shock it loose . in my job as gearbox builder (20 odd years) i use pullers and heat and some home made **** to remove hubs gears bearings from all sorts of things .2 things that work well heat and shock i would try shock first i use a air chissel for shock as they work realy good for taking off and refitting anything i come accross in everyday jobs i do.
heat works good also but only heat the centre never the outer part best to heat it as quick as you can and then get the thing off as soon as poss .not good if you need to keep heating it time after time .not good overheating a flywheel im sure there insulated:biggrin

No that wont work , basically its a bolt that threads through the centre of the flywheel and forces itself against the end of the crank pushing the flywheel off the end . I used a DAF lorry wheel stud as they are the same thread and pitch and bloody strong ( get from any TRuck spares place couple of quid or friendly truck company ). Then I filed some edges on it for a spanner to fit on the end of it , to be able to turn it
post one to you just for postage if you like

Eddie
