Oh, and paul, what is the purpose of the links, anyway? I have seen pics of the AF-1 and OEM ones side by side and will admit that the AF-1 links look the mutt's nutz... but why is it a good idea to change?

The short version is that in a VERY small number of cases the link plates have failed, causing the rear suspension (on RSV-R's - same link) to collapse, causing very heavy crashes.

The risk in percentage terms is small, but as HarryH on AF1 put it "you wouldn't let your daughter ride it without fitting them, would you?" In my case it was my wife's bike and I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if she crashed as a result of a failure in a £40 component. I fitted my set Tuesday night.

For the full story on LINK PLATES follow the hyperlink to the thread on the AF1 Forum. There are also a couple of linked threads on the RSV-R section. You will probably find something in RSVZone as well if you look.

Thanks mate. That is ****** up. Being of the fluffier variety of rider I am thinking that it would behoove me to make the change...

I should be 7'8" then for 19st+...

If I can get down to 225lb, then I'll be 50 lbs bigger than my 6'6" brother and still happy that I am such a waif figured gentleman compared to now...

Put it on you to-do list, fit them when you treat yourself to that rear shock, be it Ohlins, Penske, Manxton etc.

If you suffer back issues the rear shock will transform the ride, the newer T's have even shittier rear shocks than the Tuoldo's.

Seein' as you and weeksy are the resident experts... What rear shock would you say has the best bang for the buck. I love the look of Ohlins gold, but am not completely attached. Value for the money works for me and my Scottish heritage.

When I looked at prices - Summer 07 - for Liz's Tuono the Ohlins shock was the best price, but Liz only weighs about 140+ pounds rather than our 200+. So she is fine with a standard 105N spring that comes in the box with the shock.

With yourself being a larger gentleman, then the best bet may be to email a couple of suspension specialists over your side of the pond, and get a price for a shock with a heavier duty spring fitted, if you require one.

You should email the guys at the online shop side of AF1 they are some of the most helpful lads I've come across, and can probably advise you if your weight needs a heavier spring. In theory I should be able to work it out myself given what I do for a living, but designing suspension for a motorcycle is a wee bit different to bridges for highways etc.
They do the RSVR/Tuono factory shock for about $600 plus shipping ISTR - which was about £400 with import duty etc. by the time it got to the UK.

You should look at Penske - they are highly regarded on the forums and should be cheaper on your side of the pond, when I looked the shipping killed it off.

Blimey, is everyone on here a bit of a lardo ? You might be better with 2 shockers Shvly mate , you sound like a friggin man mountain.

**** off mate... I'm a svelte 19st (and maybe a little more). It's you poncey diminutive gits of 13st or so that make me look bigger.

And thanks Paul. Added on FB, btw. I am now surfing for Ohlins and looking into the Penske. I've ordered and dealt with the boys at AF-1 and have always been exceedingly pleased with the support and service I have received. I'll see if they have any spare shocks lying around. :)

I'll have you know our Shvl IS a mountain man - he loves mountin' women.

There are two versions of Ohlins shocks for our bikes available at AF1. One has a remote hydraulic pre-load adjuster for $1099 USD:

And the other is the standard Factory unit for $599USD:

Plus that have two heavier rated springs:

Thanks chunkster. Got it on another tab right now and taking a look. I love the remote, but thinking it would be overkill for me. If my name was Josh Hayes, I might go for it. Or if I win the lottery.

Me too mate. If and when I upgrade, it'll be to the "Factory" type with an uprated spring.

Now then lad. I was trying to be a bit more genteel than that. Let's try to couch in more politically correct terms shall we? The Fluffy Bunny mod? Rotunda shock? Big Boy Bouncer? These sound better than the "Oh my **** he's huge better get a crane to lift him on his bike!!!" shock mod.
