Engine Surging?

Evening gents, my new 2009 Tuono 1000 R is still being run-in (seems like forever due to local weather). It starts fine and when warmed-up the idle engine speed is smooth at about 1300RPM, which seems acceptable.
However she will not run smoothly at 3000rpm in 1st gear and I have to continuously slip the clutch in order to keep the revs above 3000 in town traffic conditions to prevent engine/bike surging :bawling. My question is, is this the normal condition for this model bike? If not, can anyone give me some advice for a fix, (apart from changing to a 15t front sprocket). Has anyone else experienced this problem? :rolleyes

Al there all that way mucker, you could try new cans, map2, new air box and then the gearing. I run 15/40 and find it fine but then am not doing a lot of city miles. Some swear by 15/42.
You could look at fitting a Power commanderV with custom maps etc.
If it were me I'd try the gearing first as it's yer cheapest option and it will improve the problem, it all depends on how much yer want to spend.

like the loons say Al min...they all do that so dinnae let it get tae ye. Change the gearin tae 15 fornt at least and personally ah wid go 42 rear an it,ll sort oot that lumpy bit at 3K plus if ye can run tae the expense, some mair open cans an set tae Map 2 will def mak awe the difference.

Or ye jist could live wi it as is an avoid the toon ridin.

O.K. points taken and thanks guys. I will have a wee whine at the dealer when I take it in for the first service (he, he,) and then afterwards change the front sprocket to 15t.
Cheers Al.

If its on aftermarket cans double check its on Map 2. I saw one the other day the dealer had said was on map 2 but when plugged in clearly said Map 1.

Similar problem with my 2010 (2009) T changed to 15/40 plus throttle bodies properly balanced and Map 2 even with the original exhausts - obviously all done after the first service. All soo smooth now

Even better after fitting a set of Arrows cans

I hiv nae problems at aw in the toon. I can bumble along in 2nd nae probs. I've got 15/42, cans, PC3 and custom map. And MPG is usually always better than Rico's:thumbup

Well fellers I got my run-in miles in with a great 230 mile ride last Thursday, a bit cold over the mountains but no rain though.:thumbup The ride from Seattle area was east on Route 2 to Leavensworth (not the jail) via Stevens Pass, then south via Bluett Pass (a great road with new surface last year and little to zero traffic) on to Cle Elum, then west back home on the I-90 freeway. The Tuono ran lovely and even though I rarely exceeded the 6,000 rpm limit she still flew nicely, pulls like a train up any gradient and the bike just dives in and out the corners. I am impressed with the handling, also it is a very comfortable ride as well, great bike all round.
I had the 600 mile service done and a minor tweak to the air/fuel ratio made, unfortunately a 15t front sprocket was not available,:banghead now I have to wait for that to arrive but handling at traffic speeds in 2nd gear is a little better already and I am a much happier bunny than my first posting indicates. :yes

really pleased this thread came up because i thought it was just the way i was riding, any one got any tips for what cans to fit without a second mortgage being involved.

Al, you coud allways stick a 43 tooth sprocket on the rear iff you are haveing probs getting a 15 , I am running 16-43 on a standed chain Bike pulls lovely in all gears , it dose shorten your wheel base by 12.mm , but I find it dose not efeckt stability and is a little beter to flick the bike arownd tight bends .
