Hi guys,
I've just bought a 2003 model RSV after px'ing my 2007 R6 (due to credit crunch induced money issues). I asked a lot of people their advice and a huge majority recommended the RSV- and so far it seems ok, although I've only had it 4 days....

She's a big old girl and cetainly not as nimble as the R6 (which I was expecting) but also not that quick (which I wasn't).

I've just ordered a Fuel ti end can to save weight, an early model collector box, air box conversion thingy and renthal 16/43 sprockets for better drive.

I'm taking it to Mallory on May 15th to see how she goes.

My question is of Eproms:
I've read conflicting posts about eprom chips- will they produce plug 'n' play powergains by richening the mixture where required?
If yes, where do I get one from- and can someone please explain why I keep reading about 1st and 2nd maps?
Does the stock ecu have an alternative map pre-programmed?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm very new to all this! Ta!

DR Rossi is your boy for a custom map mate, theres a thread kicking about from the last week about the two wires :)

The stock chip is very good in terms of power.

An aftermarket eeprom is generally as much about matching fueling to other mods and smoothing things out.

If you want to get the best from it you need to put a high flow airbox on there. The eeprom on it's own is probably not gonna do that much for you.

There is no map 2 for pre 04 bikes just a map for non uk restricted zone bikes and one unrestricted. 03 bikes often didn't get unrestricted correctly as there seems to be some confusion as to whether the maps are still restricted on 03 bikes. Even Aprilia seem to give out conflicting info regards that year hence some dealers cut the ecu wire and some didn't.

It certainly won't hurt to cut the ecu wire if not already done. At worst you will get the same map as before.

Cool, thank you.
I've literally just spent the money on an 'SP style' airbox upgrade which replaces the airbox and uses the underside of the tank cavity. It comes with a 'race quality' cone filter so that should increase air flow significantly shouldn't it? (alongside the less restrictive collector box?)

Sorry Spoonz, I hadn't seen your reply when I last posted.
Which wire do I cut?

I read another thread about restriction where the OP said his bike felt flat and struggled past 150mph, didn't wheelie etc etc... Well I think that's mine!

My R6 was 115.4bhp with a pc3 & micron system and it was much fitter than the RSV. I'm sure there must me another 10hp hiding somewhere as right now it feels like a 100bhp bike.

cut and insulate this wire

Dont forget 115bhp on an R6 will be faster than the same hp on an RSV because of the overall weight difference. The delivery will certainly be different.

You is missing the big point "torque"......................no point in having 115 bhp or 1115 bhp if it comes at 22000 rpm and has no torque.

There arnt many bikes that can out grunt an RSV for torque at medium to low revs

Hi Kiwi- I agree to a certain extent. Torque is important but ultimately power is just as (if not more) important than torque.

After all, power is just torque x revs divided by 5250.

I used to race 2 stroke motocross and ride in the fast group so I'm comfortable enough keeping a 600 spinning above 10,000 and still retaining a 5,500 wide powerband.

Not saying I was good at it, but just capable!

My first bike was a 750 Monster which had about 65bhp but was a pleasure to ride due to the easy to ride torque characteristics and low weight.

I'm not looking for an all powerful bike or else I would've bought a 1000cc 4 cylinder, I know I'm not good enough to deserve that anyway. Would like to have a similar output from the RSV- especially as it is that much heavier.

Interested to see you're in Southend? Just up the road from me!

Where abouts are you then Jon ?

My previous bike was a fairly well built R1 , it could keep a 1098R honest but was a rev monster hideous on the road and too revvy for Brands.

My Aprilia is down on power (by about 30 bhp compared to the R1@ the rear wheel)but up on torque and so much easier to ride fast as a result.

Gimme a fat midrange anyday of the week

To each his own I guess :)

I'm in Hornchurch, so only 20 mins away.

I've never ridden a 1000cc/4, so honestly couldn't compare. Fastest thing I've ridden is a BSS CBR600 that had HRC internals (about the best you can do within Supersport regs). That was a 2004 bike and approx 124bhp @ rear wheel. I did two sessions on it at mallory and that blew my R6 into the weeds, but was completely flat below 9k. Not a bit, completely.

What does your Aprilia put out? I'm getting minr dyno'd on Saturday as it is now and will take it back after I've played with it a bit.

120bhp would be lovely, but perhaps optimistic? I think the dyno I take it to is also a little generous, but for the sake of comparison it's fine.

I'm riding again at Mallory next Friday (15th May) and will hopefully be at Brands Hatch soon, just because it's local and easy.

ooooooh Hornchurch, 2 of my mates are coppers & work out of Hornchurch :)

I havnt had the bike dyon'd yet , but would guess at around 118-120 & somewhere around 77-79 ftlbs - that said Tim (Areesmill) was getting well into the high 120 mark from his (cant remember the torque figures)

I am running an open airfilter, RP58 chip and Termi end can so I should pull my finger outand jump on the dyno

The later big valve motors would be around 10-12 bhp up on that (as a guess)

My 2003 model RSV 1000 was dyno'd about three weeks back and with a Titanium Akropovic race can fitted and a K&N air filter, I 'm now getting 118.9 bhp at the rear wheel :doug

Mmm, interesting thread...I had an R6 prior to RSV (albeit an older model) and there is no comparison. The R6 was quick & tap dancing on the gear shift was required to make good progress, plus when I first rode the RSV it felt slow compared to the R6, however when looking at the speedo I realised I was going significantly quicker than I would on the R6 and it felt easier to make the speed - dunno if that was the difference between the screaming inline4 and the more lazy V-Twin & I did find the rev limiter on lots of occassions. After a year and a half of twins I think I would struggle to get back to grips with a 'screamer'.....I hope you get to grips with the bike soon as they are loads of fun!

Cheers guys, this is all really useful and interesting stuff.
I'd be chuffed with 119bhp, so that's a very useful target.

I'll let you guys know what the dyno says about the bike as it is stock- it could be it's not running properly or massively down on power as I know the R6 would eat this for breakfast and spit it out again.

Going up and down the gearbox was never an issue for me; i had onboard cameras when I rode at Cartagena in Jan and love watching the film just to hear the bike sing. I do realise the power delivery is very different though and the twin can be deceptively fast.

Just a learning curve I suppose?

Oh final thing, I had a pair of GP Racers fitted upon collection and I opted for a 180 rear section to help the handling. Do you guys run 180's or 190's?

I run a 190 as the 180 turned tipped in too quickly for my geriatric reaction times...............:)
