Electrics problem.....

M

Moggi

Was riding back home from Donington on Saturday and noticed that my dash had gone dead and then my alarm started going off, so I pulled over. I then stalled the bike and tried firing it back up but nothing.

I phoned breakdown and while I was waiting I thought "maybe it's a blown fuse?" but I annoyingly had left my toolkit at home so couldn't check myself.

The recovery guy turned up, assessed the bike and came to the same conclusion, a fuse had blown. Hed replaced it and so I set off again. 10 mins down the road and the dash went blank again so I thought "**** it!" and decided just to get home, turning the alarm off every time it went off. :roll

I knew I had to fill-up soon but didn't know when and couldn't get fuel as the bike wouldn't fire-up again if I turned it off. So I trundled from Nottingham back to Lincoln, going no faster than 60 as I was worried about running dry!

Anyway, I've been having a look at the bike today. Everything seems fine (the dash came on) but at one point, the diagnostics bit came up on the dash without me even hooking it up. I turned the ignition off/on and it had gone. I'm concerned that I'll have another blown fuse when I get out on the road. As some of you will know, the same fuse is for the ignition/dash/controls/brake light.

Any ideas? :dunno

I remember now, the dash came on because I replaced the 2nd blown fuse when I got home! :roll

Still need some help tho.

Did the bike get wet at Donnington :dunno check your plugs, wiring connectors etc for water ingress or loose connections. sounds like somethings shorting out :dunno

What alarm have you got ?

Moggi - you should be aware that there was an outbreak of Aprilia Electrics Swine Flu at Donington on Saturday - I was there and mine ended up going home on an AA wagon with similar-ish problems. I'll be looking for a loose/chaffed wire first - I think the diag code on the dash (which I also got) is a red herring and just a by-product of a wiring short. Let me know if you find anything and I'll do the same.:thumbup
No Sprock, they didn't get wet there, dry all day for me.

Was bone dry for me too :thumbup

Well, I thought I'd checked as much wiring as I could today so put bike back together. Was fitting the headlight unit and noticed the headlight wasn't on, just the little parking light thingy.

I checked all the light switches (high/low/pass) and they show up on the dash as working but the lights themselves don't actually work. I've checked the bulbs/fuse/relay and everything seems fine. The indicators and horn work so it can't be the controls unit.

Could it be the battery? I tried firing the bike up but just got that buzzing from the rear end. Have just hooked it up to the Optimate so I'll check it before work or tomorrow.

SPROCKER, I've got a Datatool System 3 alarm.

You need to find why that bulb isn't working moggi, if the bulbs ok and the fuse it might be a broken wire/bad connection or something. have you tested for voltage at the bulb fitting?

I haven't tested yet Dave but I find it weird that all 3 of the headlight bulbs have gone and the little parking light is still working? Or am I being naive?

I'm hopeless with electrics! :roll

On the subject of electrics..............i bought my RSVR brand new late 06
after 450 miles fuses started to pop when lights came on or brake light applied, Main agent told me it had to have a replacement wiring loom.
AAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH gutted.....i had to wait over 4 months for Aprilia to send a new loom to the shop...

 4months ffs, did they have to mine the copper to make your loom . . . . thats a farkin unacceptable time frame :rant

I'm getting seriously frustrated now!!! :mad1

I've charged the battery overnight and the bike turns over now but when I turn the bike on, the fuel pump doesn't prime. The last time I had that problem, it was the ECU chip. Also, I've tried to hook up the diagnostics connection but nothing happens.

The lights still don't work. I don't have a spare battery to do testing of relays etc. either, just a multimeter. :dunno

I THINK I've sorted it! :doug

There was a loose connection in one of the relays, probably for the pump, seeing as it wasn't working.

When I turned on the ignition, the pump primed and DIAG came up on the dash. Hooked-up the headlights and they worked too. Just have to get the bike back together and see what happens when I take it for a spin! :thumbup

GOOD LUCK, hope youve found the answer to the probs youve had :doug

Glad you found it mate, i would buy a relay and replace it, they are only a few quid, just replaced two on my Futura due to erratic starting traced to a faulty engine stop relay, i just replaced the fuel pump one at the same time.

Having just read this thread about the fuel pump priming,.
I'm pretty sure mine doesn't, is it a whirring noise when the ignition is turned on?
Does anyone know if this is a problem and what the effects are likely to be??
Any advice will be greatly received.
Cheers,

Are you talking about the relays in the back behind the starter solenoid Moggi? How did you find out one was duff?

OK, Simple as that. I no longer have a problem then, starts fine.
Cheers for the answer.
