ECU gremlins! AAAARRRGGGHHHHHHHHHH

Right everyone.
Shoulda tried this first I suppose but last night I unplugged the ecu. Left it till this morning and just plugged it back in. Immobiliser light is now behaving as it should, starts properly and revvs freely. Going for a thrash right now!!!

Happy bunny that it's fixed but you know what?

What's made me really happy is the numerous offers of help and the hands extended in friendship for a fellow biker in trouble.
It's been a hard week for me. My brother is being cremated tomorrow after a truck took him off his bike three weeks ago. There was an inquest and the driver is now being prosecuted for dangerous driving.
At times like this the friendship from fellow bikers is much appreciated.
So for all of you: Ride free, ride safe and God Speed.

After all, we're all brothers.

Glad to hear that you have banged that ECU gremlin on the head matey. :thumbup
Very sad to hear of your families loss...condolences to you and yours bud.
Yes, this site has quality members...personally i think this is the best forum i have ever been a member of.:inlove

Maf, sincere condolences to you and your family.

Hope you've got it all sorted fella

Feel for you Maf, my thoughts are with you.
Glad the bikes sorted and i echo Aus in regards to the quality of folk in this forum :biggrin

Damn and blast.
Foolish is he who reports before test ride.
20 metres down the road guess what?

I've picked up some plugs and changed em. Rear plug wet and oily and black. Will check plug heads and leads and coils next in that order (cheers AMB67). Probably do it over the weekend now. The other electronic problems threw me from my usual line of investigation. Clocks at 37 miles and immobiliser appears to be absolutely fine. Also fyi it's kept on an optimte most of the time.

If any of you guys think you may be down this way let me know, I'll give you my number and get the kettle on.

Thanks for all the messages everyone! YOU ROCK

Im late in on this thread. Sorry to hear your terrible news Maf. Im sure we will get to meet up some time. Welcome to South West Posse.

Ok plug caps (5k ohm) are reading 5.1k and 4.8k. The cylinder that's not firing is the one with the 5.1k....

we continue!

Maf, those resistances sound OK to me.

When your measuring the resistance, wiggle and bend the lead and see if the resistance values fluctuate. If they do then it's a good chance it has failed internally.

(I take it the leads are in good condition, no nicks, burns or perishing going on?)

If all is well with the leads and you say you have fitted new plugs, then the next step has to be to try and swap the coils over to see if the misfire moves to the other cylinder.

If the misfire doesn't move then you've ruled out the LT and HT circuits and we will have to look at other areas.

Let us know what you find.

Right, checked the leads all good and measuring 0 ohms on their own with the same 4.8 and 5.1 K ohm when the caps are attached. Wriggled and bent them and resistance values remained the same. The coils are all in one piece so I can't see how to swap them. The manual has a section on how to measure the resistance of the windings but is as clear as mud with the pins not labelled in an understandable way. However, there is a little white deposit around the inside of where the ht lead inserts. Think this is causing the problems? Has anyone got a idiots guide to checking the coils out with a multimeter?

Dash voltage with bike running out of interest ?

Ahaaaaa!

The numbers are totally different in my manual!
Made no sense at all.

I'll check the dash voltage and let you know.
Cheers Spoonz!

That test is from Aprilia's own official service manual so it's likely to be correct.

You should be able to test from the pins shown in the diagram. Just unplug the connector and put you meter on the pins.

Unlikely to be secondary winding cos it's common to both cylinders but might as well test anyway.

Sorry Spoons, I'm being dim.
I meant the best place to test the clock voltage.

I have an online manual which labels all the pins differently. It's their official one and has exactly the same picture and layout!

Sorry

The clocks have a voltage display on them. Just change it to the correct display and it will give you batt voltage but do it with bike running.

Can't remeber but i think the middle button scrolls through the display modes.

Don't pull the plugs out of the clocks or you may spike the can line

Jeezus!
I'm emabarrassed at being SUPER dim today.

I knew that.. hahahahahahaha

And on a public forum too... I'm such a stoopid arse sometimes!

This mornings findings:
Voltage at 13.2 - 13.4 at tickover.
Ticking over on both cylinders ok, had plugs out and both firing fine.
Boh pipes hot.
Coil measures fine on the multimeter.
Problem seems to be getting worse. Less likely to start.

It just dies when the throttle is opened too far.
Might have a look at the fuel system next?
