Don't laugh, honest opinions on tuono vs speed triple wanted please!

I haven't ridden a Trumpet so can't comment on that, Robbo. But what I do know is that having looked over a Speed Triple ('09 version) that's always in the bike park at work build quality is nowhere as good as on the Aprilia. Assuming that counts for something in your Dad's checklist?

Lol, long story, but in a nutshell, he retired to spend the next 20 years with my mum living chapter 2 of their lives together but she passed away at the end of last year.

His main passion is guitars & playing in various bands. Bikes will always be secondary but he has the time to use so in his words 'he might as well ride something he enjoys' :thumbup
 
I test rode a send hand Speed Tripple from a local dealer before I bought the T.
I looked really tidy, but on a test ride I felt like I was sitting on top of the bike rather than part of it, if you know what I mean.
Additionally, it has a bad missfire half way through the rev range & the gearbox was like an old tractor.
When I took it back, the dealer thought I was taking the piss, but they subsequently phoned back saying they had fixed both issues & was I still interested.
In my opinion, both the above problems should have been rectified before a test ride.
But a bike that was a couple of years old should not have been like that, so I binned Triumph off as a bad idea.
Any way, I never did like the look of the back end. It did me a favour.
 
My brother has a 1050 speed triple, i have had a go on it. I found like someone else above i think the riding position a bit unnatural and after about 50 miles was not comfortable. The bars seem flatter than the tuono. Engine is nice, i my opinion its bloody ugly bike at the front end. the suspension seems well set up. I dont think he would be dissopointed. I think this one is about preference rather than one being outstanding over the other. I think the triumph may well be more reliable but there are reports of some early corrosion on the triple.
This one is a horses for courses decision but a brand new T for 6500 i know what i would buy !! The wild card entry if comfort is on his agenda is the 1050 tiger same engine taller but more comfy.

Funny, if you read the road test link on the first page, it says the complete opposite about riding positions on both bikes. Sit in the speed triple & perch on top of the t?

I have but it's his money, lol.

Plus, if he did go for the speed triple, I’d have a choice of steeds to use. Am seriously trying to get him to consider the street triple now. My brother used to work for TWO magazine (now visordown) & when they tested the street triple they were all blown away with its performance & handling for a mid-range bike?

The Tuono is a fantastic bike but does have it`s faults.
Most we get past but if you want to accelerate from 50+ mph you have to drop a cog or two . No problem but the Speed Triple just accelerates in top gear.
I therefore think the Speed 3 is Triumph`s equivilant of the "T". (I prefare the "T", a no brainer).
Now the Street 3 is a lighter version of the speed and there is nowhere you cannot put this bike. It`s fast,It`s light and it turns well and you can really throw this bike into any corner or bend. It`s so flexible. :thumbup
Top speed around 150 ish so not slow.
You need to test ride one for a few hours or even a day . I got my street and thought it was the "Be All and End All".......it is. I even thought of selling the "T". I am keeping both.:thumbup
You don`t need our opinions ,test ride and make your own ,I know you will want one .

I am 56 this month or still 17 and a big kid

As you say, once he's had a go on all bikes, he'll be able to make his own mind up. Was just looking for input from people that have had experience on these bikes cos you'll tell him what the dealer won't!

I've ridden the Triumph Tiger and din't like it at all. Yes its fast but didn't have any confidence in the front end at all. Always felt like it was going to slip away from in front of me. Got back on my bike at the end of having it MOT'd (it was the mechanics Tiger) and felt right at home. My bike at the time was BMW R1200S. I wouldn't want to test ride the Tiger again. PS engine was a peach though.

It`s the same engine as the ST3 only a bit bigger.
It is a better tourer than the Street but I know a couple of lads (brothers) who toured around Italy last year and NO complaints.
Services must be carried out by triumph people or your two year warranty is scrapped .
The street3 "R" has better suspension although mine is ok but some guys want that extra bit of bling and you will need (not necessary a few extra`s)
Tool kit is 1 allen key ..... fits almost everything . It`s all to do with weight.
 
I test rode the new triple and it's an awesome bike expescially with the Arrow twin exhaust, handles well except a little wobble under hard acceleration, very very comfy and a good riding position, but it lacks something the Tuono has and that's spunk.
 
I'm about the same age as your Dad, about 5' 9" and weigh about 12 and a half stone, I rode both back to back when I was looking for a new naked bike.
I opted for the T, but I would say the same as others already have, the trumpet became uncomfortable after about 30 miles because of the bars and the T was just comfortable and stayed so, the engine on the triumph is a little softer in tune, so is an easier ride around town, the gearbox on the Triumph felt a little agricultural in comparison with the T. The suspension is a little kinder on the Trumpet in standard form, I've owned a 955i daytona in the past and they have their own niggles the same as the T does, on mine it was fuel sensors causing a misfire when pulling hard, but on the T if I come home and the fuel light comes on as I enter the drive, I just know it won't go until I put fuel in it ( I keep a gallon in the garage now ) so it's a case of finding out what the niggles are and working around them!
I think it comes down to personal choice, so I wish your Dad well with whatever he gets, tell him to enjoy it.
Both are good machines in different ways, but the T won the day for me.
 
I took a 675 Daytona out on test a while ago the same time as my mate took the speed triple. The 675 engine in my view is more fun, and the bigger bike couldn't leave it. We swapped for a while, and although the 1050 felt better, it was an illusion. The 675 was always in the mirror.
There was a test in a bike mag about 18 months ago between the speed & street, and the street got the vote. I think your old man would prefer the street too.
 
Ash mine starts no problem if fuel light comes on when its in the garage. Happened to me the other day. One prod and boom boom boom it fired up.
 
Having owned both in the last year, i'm going to upset a few people by saying the Speed has a a better engine for road use (it has torque from nowhere to the redline) and it has a sportier riding position than the T, better fuel economy and far better fuel range. (The Tuono fuel range really pissed me off at times).

The Tuono has a great finish ( as good as any bike i have owned), is great fun on the roads, has more top end than the Triumph (but less low down torque), has a sportier feel to the engine, better suspension if you go for the Ohlins-equipped bikes, a great road presence.............. but the most appalling spares back up i have ever come across.

You need to try both to find what suits best.

Another bike worth test riding is a KTM SM990 or 950.

My local dealer has a 60 plate speed in white with under 1000 miles for £6000. Can't find one cheaper anywhere. Theirs a spanker T at another dealer in town, matt black with 0 miles for £6500 so depends on what he prefers I guess?

A new T (assuming you still get full warranty etc) for £6.5K is a great deal

The best deals I ever saw was when Taz for a short time were doing £7K for white ones with ako's, or £7.5K for black with ako's
