Don't laugh, honest opinions on tuono vs speed triple wanted please!

Ok, wrong biased forum to ask but here goes!

The old mans been riding a z1000 for the last few years. In my eyes, a great bike, he just don't feel at home / confident on it. To be fair, the riding positions not the best & feels like your fighting it on the twisties all the time, which is his problem. On numerous occasions he'd thought about taking the bike over the car but talked himself out of it (his words, not mine). Being he's now retired & for other reasons I'd rather not go into, he has more time to ride so feels like a change.

Anyway, let him have a blast on the T the other day. 10 mins in, he pulls up to tell me he feels at home & much more confident on it. 30 mins later whilst sipping on a pint starts to ask where to look for a T. In the conversation that then followed I suggested test riding a few bikes & the speed triple was addressed, which is a bike he'd always liked. Price wise, a year or so old, they're much a muchness.

He's 56 & looking for something that's easy to ride, comfy, reliable & cool looking (not all of the latter describe the T I know). Thought I'd had him sold on the T until he sent me this

He's got l a test ride booked for next week on the triple, so was just after honest opinions from peeps that have ridden both as to what would suit him best and why?

Robbo, I tested loads of super-nakeds before I plumped for the T.

Although I've not tried the very new speed triple, I'd summise the previous model as much more placid than a T. I love the look of it but it's a bit boring to be honest. The STReet triple however is absolutely superb. The only problem with them is that they aint exactly butch (apologies in advance)

The only thing I found close to the T experience was a SuperDuke which is even more barking

The other suprise was a FZ1 (naked). Obviously very different but superb in every way and very rapid

Z thou's are crap TBH

I tried these and a few others (streetfighter, Guzzi griso, CB1000R, Buell, others I can't remember...) over one summer a couple of years back. I wrote a blog on it. I'll try to drag up the details
 
Baith ur top bikes TR min, so hard tae honestly say one is better than the other as each has its special character and does every thing it says oan the tin plus more. As we all ken ( an sumtimes deny tae oorselves) Tuonos can be a bitty high maintenance whereas I reckon the SpeedTrip wid be simpler tae live with.

So ah guess thats the question yer auld man needs tae ask hissel, as baith machines dae the bizz...
( but the correct answers the T o course :thumbup)
 
Let him go for a ride on the Triumph. He'll be back to the Tuono in a heartbeat. Odd riding pos for me on the Trip. Caused the metal arm to fall asleep and spasm in about ten minutes of riding. Sooo glad to get on the Street Triple. Even with my size and penchant for horsepower, I preferred the Street hands down to the Speed. My two cents.

So street triple, even though a smaller bike, appears to be a better ride?
 
i have a 1050 speedy, had 4years its a 05 model very reliable easy to ride its got fantasic torque comphy as hell, not gunna spit you off or any thing lol its a bit heavy, but very confidence inspiring planted kinda thing, no way as sharp as a prilly! oh brakes are pretty ****** on early models like mine, think the 06-07 ones are good 08-10 are brembo so **** hot the new shape bike is sposed to handle as sweet as the street but with that extra ump of the 1050 but i havent riden one yet! as rusty says the street really is a superb bike just coz its a 675 its not a up n down the box 600 style bike its tourquey as hell and handles as sharp n light as hell best test ride all of them i say as people have different oppinions.... Super duke rusty is very evil muchmore aggresive that a 1050 or prilly in fact its the kiddy......i will get another one i reckon i really do miss my
old one, i test rode new and old z1000 old style was pretty ****** i thought, new was ok but still not as good as a 1050 let alone a prilly
 
rico..good point speedy is a easy bike to look after i can service mine on my own peice of cake....not ure bout this fancy italian thing yet lol

Cheers evlin, nice to hear from someone who's owned both. I said the street but then talked him out of it due to the size & 675 motor, but if good maybe he can test one of those too!
 
Interesting that everyone rates the Street above the Speed Triple. I'm not in the market for a new bike (the T is a keeper for a good few years) but like Shovel, I'm always blinded by higher bhp figures. I'd struggle to go for the Street over the Speed for that reason alone, plus the fact that the Street is tiny, even for an 11 stone weakling like me.

Just goes to show that bike buying tends to be heart over head. (Whereas when it comes to buying cars it's practicality all the way for me, mpg over bhp every time, slippers please...)

Lol.

My local dealer has a 60 plate speed in white with under 1000 miles for £6000. Can't find one cheaper anywhere. Theirs a spanker T at another dealer in town, matt black with 0 miles for £6500 so depends on what he prefers I guess?
 
its one of them bikes where you think nah thats gunna be *****! but it bloody suprized me like hell, as i had 1050 thought no chance is this gunna compare...its ******* fast light, and as i say no banging up n down gears ! i looked a clown on it as im not that small doh! i have to say though im not a fan of trummpy fineshes on their bikes...but that said all new stuff looks crappy built to a budget i spose, all the lacour just peeed of the 1050 i have took nearly all triumph parts of and replaced any how lol . have you ridden a triple????
 
trobbo, yes the last of the old shape 1050s are going for good prices, you may even get the bellypan, fly screen bat face, thrown in!!! the triumph forum i frequent like all the time lol is very helpfull should your dad decide to get one, they will know all the deals out there on stuff. i still pick prilly over 1050 though wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
gilo that bay is a flamming wussssssssssssssss, i also hear he rides like ******!

My chicken strips are huge due to not haven been out for more than a 10 mile run on the Tyres yet. I've nit resorted to taking sandpaper to them yet to get them to disappear gilo ;)
 
Retired at 55 / 56?

Tell him to get back to work and stop fudding about on motorbikes.

One of my best mates has retired at the age of 49 from a life times' service as a West Midlands **** stubble.

When we all meet up on Monday night in the pub ... he's the only ****** not getting up for work early next day ... and the last ****** to offer to buy a round!
 
My brother has a 1050 speed triple, i have had a go on it. I found like someone else above i think the riding position a bit unnatural and after about 50 miles was not comfortable. The bars seem flatter than the tuono. Engine is nice, i my opinion its bloody ugly bike at the front end. the suspension seems well set up. I dont think he would be dissopointed. I think this one is about preference rather than one being outstanding over the other. I think the triumph may well be more reliable but there are reports of some early corrosion on the triple.
This one is a horses for courses decision but a brand new T for 6500 i know what i would buy !! The wild card entry if comfort is on his agenda is the 1050 tiger same engine taller but more comfy.
