daughter fell off the back

The title says it all really.

Me + my daughter Lucie and my young mate Matt on his RS125 were our for a run yesterday and decided to head for the bike shop in Kidderminster.

All going to plan ... nice steady run.

When we got to the big roundabout in Kiddy ... there, tootling round it at 4mph using both lanes was an old fat fellow on a non-road legal mobility scooter ... Matt behind him and a car behind him ... then me.

All into roundabout at 6 to leave at 9

Matt went round the scooter and away he went

Car swerved round weaving scooter and off he went ...

Then us ...

Me and Lucie were both laughing and she (I couldnt see this) thinks she looked over her left shoulder to gave him a wave ... just as I accelerated from 5mph ... and she fell off the back.

I felt her go and in my mirror saw her land on her arse ... planted ... no slip or roll just "plant on arse"

I slammed the brakes on and literally threw myself off the bike before it had even come to a complete stop to run the (measured by police) 10m back to her ... terrified that a car would come round and hit her as she was literally sitting in the middle of the road.

First past was the guy on the scooter who said "that was a nasty tumble" and carried on without stopping.

Within seconds I had 2 x off duty cops, an off duty fire fighter, a nurse and 2 x first aiders ... with various others waving away the traffic.

Lucie was in agony, complaining of pain in coccyx and lower back ...

Multiple calls for ambulance.

Despite the Police HQ being literally 500 yards away it was a full 10 mins before 2 WPCs arrived on foot and 20 mins for the ambulance.

Some blokes picked my bike up and moved it onto the pavement as clutch fluid and fuel were leaking.

The cops suggested I ride it the 400 yards to Police HQ so I could travel in ambulance.

Was it shock that made me run out the cop shop car park and be utterly unsure as to which way to run back?

As it happens the ambulance drove past and I ran after it ...

I went with Lucie in the ambulance to Worcester hospital ... Matt followed and his dad travelled 45 miles for them both to wait in the errrr waiting room for the 5.5 hours we were there.

After lots of tests and 2 x sets of Xrays they concluded that she has a very badly bashed coccyx ,,,, although they were worried that she had also damaged a "triangular bone above that" which starts with s I think? (Shovel will know)

What can I say?

I have a grippy pillion seat cover, proper love handles (seriously ... no jokes) and Lucie has CE leg, hip, elbow and back protectors ... plus lid, plus armoured gloves ... the only part of her body not protected was her arse.

I have never been so scared in all my life

Poor Lucies hobbling about in a lot of pain telling people she had a blonde moment and forgot to hold on ... but I am wracked with guilt and worse than that I have the biggest "what if" list raging in my head.

What if I'd been doing 90mph?

What if a tyre blows?

What if a car pulls out?

What if a car had sped round behind us and hit her as she sat in the road?

I didn't go to bed last night and here I sit at 0240 hrs still not ready for sleep.

Sorry folks ,,, that was a bit of an outpouring but I had to get it all out.

Unlucky dude, however bottom line you OK, and your daughter is OK. No doubt you will have a laugh about it soon enough.

Sorry to hear that Lucie is hurt, but glad that you were riding slow. I know the feeling all to well. Last fall my son had a high-side off on his Street Triple. I knew was bad when I saw that his left knee wasn't where it should be. Fortunately an off-duty paramedic was right there and tended to him while I literally paced feeling utterly helpless. All Michael could say was that he was sorry for wrecking the bike. I said f the bike, I could care less about the bike. He was airlifted to the regional trauma center and all turned out alright, but he now has a rod in his femer and a dozen or so screws. He also broke his left wrist and this was also a low speed off. He would have been alright - slow low side- had his front tire not hit a curb which caused the bike to high side and snap his left leg. I would have paid anything for me to be laying there and not him. I know how you felt and still feel, but hopefully she will heal quickly - my son has. My thou hs are with you and Lucie.

Sorry to hear this about Lucie (get well soon)
Main thing as others have said both ok and this off was just an unfortunate combination of events, having lost a pillion in the past i know how you feel with the what if's? but if you thought like that all the time you never leave the house

Bloody hell, I bet you shat yourself mate. She seems like a gud un though and will laugh it off and take the piss out of you no doubt. It wasn't your fault so don't dwell on it, both get back out as quick as you can. How old is she ?
Get a Ventura system Newely lad, the grab handle is very reassuring for a pillion. I used to put the pack rack on when my 2 were smaller.

Glad to hear that your both Ok, you will both recover with time, I just hope it doesn't put her off riding with you.
Or maybe more importantly Mrs W doesn't ban her from the bike. 'kin access scooters are the bane of my life
at work and should be banned. Take care both. (hope the bike is ok)

Blinking eck New - not surprised you cacked yourself. Hope she recovers quickly, and as others have said there's no blame on your part matey so don't put yourself through hell with the what-ifs.

Don't think anybody makes trousers with arse-armour!!

thoughts are with your daughter buddy...all will mend in time, be thankfull things were no more serious

Nae good min! I think is show's how at risk we are sometime. Woudl we swap it though...I don't think so. Having a few tumbles myself over the years, one resulting in a 2 weeks hopstial stint I know I just get back on the thing. One thing I've noted though is that it's not always the high speed "offs" that can be the problem.
My 2 weeks was because a car pulled out in front of me, I was doing about 30pmh. Another was a cousin of mine. He was tottering aboot on he's 125 in town when a car swerved into his side of the road. Down he goes and slid a few feet back first in to the curb. Been using crutches or sticks ever since about 20 years now. He was doing about 20-25mph.
I hope you daughter gets better soon, and try not to get yourself cut up about it.

Chuffin ell newelly,

Give my regards to Lucie, know how she feels right now as ive done my coccyx.
Like Nob said, it wasnt your fault so dust yourselvs down and as soon as you can get back on the bike.
Anything you need just ask... within reason

Ummm. I'm thinking sacrum is the word that you are looking for, welly. Make sure that you keep Lucie up on anti inflams and NSAIDS for the first 48-72 hrs. Just make sure that she takes them around the clock. That way she won't be waking in the morn so stiff and sore that she cannae move. Dose afore she goes to bed. Leave a dose in the loo so that when she gets up to pee at 0300, she can take it with ease, then make sure that she has a dose with breakfast.
Look into some hydrotherapy for her (find a swimming pool and make her do some laps and aquasize). Swimming will take the weight off that sore bum and coccyx. Swimming makes ALL the muscles work without undue strain and Ibuprofen and acetaminophen (paracetemol) will help with pain and inflammation.

As mentioned, what ifs can keep you from leaving the house if you listen to all of them. See how Lucie feels about gang fer a ride with you after her bum is less sore. Take her on a bimble into the country, away from traffic and just some nice slow curvy roads. Settle intae the rhythm and you will both feel the healing power of father daughter shared joy again. Trust me.

^^What he said.^^
Oh,and make sure she holds on all the time and not wave to some silly old twadge on a mobility scooter.GWS Lucie.

Sincere thanks guys ...

Yes "sacrum" was the bone they were worried about.

Lucie (13) is off sick from school today and I've stopped home with her.

I really must look into Ventura system ... One of the women coppers said she'd had an identical tumble off her husbands bike and insisted her husband fitted a top box before she's consider getting back on

Mrs Welly has been ver pragmatic but knowing her parents, they'll give me some ****; just incase I'd not self flagellated enough

My wife has some trousers that have like a memory foam protection in the arse not sure they would have been much help, at least non of the "what if" happened and your both ok, these things happen and it sounds harsh but I can guarentee she will hold on next time.

Sorry to hear this newelly, I hope your daughter heals quickly.
Like others have said, if we start thinking about all that can go wrong when riding a motorcycle, we wouldn't leave the house. It is somehow easy to follow this line of thought ourselves, not so easy when it applies to our young ones, IMHO.

Just read ur post mate. Hope Lucie gets better soon. They seem to bounce back quick from things like this. I think about stuff like this when I'm not on my bike and when I'm with my little boy. My mother hates me having a bike. When I look back though at the injuries I picked up just in push bikes with no protection and playing other sports ten like everyone says it can happen to anyone. Apparently horse riders are much more at risk of injury than motorcyclists. I guess everything has it's risks.

Anyway I know how ur feeling as my little boy cut his leg the other day with me and I felt guilty as ****. I'm sure there's other things bumbling about in your head and what ifs. Things happen mate and I think in modern life we just have to accept these things.

Chillax buy her some chocolate. I'm sure she doesn't blame you at all.

Ps I know leathers and textiles don't have such bottom protection but I'm sure u can buy shorts which have said armour. I said I'd get a pair next time I went snow boarding as I did a similar thing with my backside. Bloody hurts

easy done mate....you didn't appear to put a foot wrong...so try not to beat yourself up too much...these things just happen....

hope she has a speedy recovery :thumbup

Main thing is you're both ok & will laugh about it in years to come I'm sure.

Both got to get back out on the bike, don't let the demons beat ya :thumbup

Welly, hope yer lassie gets better real soon and try not to beat yersel up to much.
It's jist one of them things that can happen.
Yer a parent and the last thing yer want to see are yer kids hurting.
