Couple of questions...

Hi again all,

Ive got a couple of questions that i thought id put into one thread about my 2001 RSV1000.

1. The battery has got to go on an Opti as its struggling like hell. So... removing the seat is a real pain in the arse, has anyone come up with a solution?? i was thinking about running some insulated wires of the battery and tuck them under the seat when not in use (so no bolt fiddling in the cold lol) - anyone done similar?

2. I need some new front discs - the oem ones are about £200 which seems alot! can anyone recommend some decent pattern items?

3. A couple of the redy/orangy stripes on my bike are a bit tatty - anyone know where i can get replacements - or anyone got pics of an 01 with them removed.

Thanks all.

Dolestar, firstly if you buy an optimate it comes with a little waterproof adaptor plug that connects to the battery. It fits nicely down behind the meshed side panel, poking out underneath and makes connecting the optimate a simple plug in affair. If you still want to make the seat easier to remove RSVR.net do some quick release seat pins for about a tenner. Secondly what's the reason you need new discs? Have you got brake judder? If you have it may well be the discs are warped however more likely it's the disc carrier bobbins that are seized. A common fault and easily remeded. Squirt some brake cleaner around the edges of the bobbin and turn the bobbin using your fingers either side, until it rotates freely. A small screwdriver inserted inside the bobbin may help to move and free it, be gentle though. Do this for all the bobbins on both discs and test. You don't need to remove the discs to do this, you can do them on the bike. If you find you do need new discs then £200 for some oem discs is fairly cheap though you could source some second hand ones, maybe put an ad in the wanted section on some Aprilia forums but just make sure they are not warped or scrap.

With regard to your decals, try http://www.ezgraphics.co.uk/, they should be able to sort you out with some replacements. Just email them detailing what you want

Battery Tender brand chargers come w/ a permanent lead as well. BTW, this same lead is the one that BMW uses as standard. Alot of electric vests, etc. use this same connector so it can double as a power outlet when you're riding and want to use as accessory. BMW even makes an adapter that plugs into this and provides you w/ a cigarette lighter type outlet.

thanks again everyone - this forum is truly an invaluable resource for all RSV owners!!

i checked the bobbins and most of them have siezed. I sprayed them with brake cleaner but still couldnt get them to move (bar 3/4 of them), when you say put a screwdirver in - where abouts do you mean?? lol - please excuse my noobiness.

Yeah, That info about the brake rotors was great. I assumed mine were bent or warped as I've been getting shaking when I break and thought I needed new rotors. Maybe now I don't!

Insert a screwdriver down the middle of the bobbin and wiggle it about gently. Squirt lots of brake cleaner both sides of the bobbin then try rotating it with your thumb and forfinger positioned either side of the disc. Try a very very small amount of WD40 down the edges of the bobbin just to lube it but make sure you clean it off any braking surfaces !

Gotta conecting plug under rear hump that connects straight to Optimate so its easy with no messing about fella

my solonoid is giving me loads of gip now aswell. when i press the starter button i just get "click". bouncing the bike will sort it eventually lol

any advise?? i had this problem occasionally with the ducati and a strip and reassemble of the wires seemed to solve it - same with RSV??

Usually indicates a dying battery or the battery just needs charging

The battery is shagged, probably a dead cell by the sounds of it, buy a new one and charge it with an optimate for at least 8 hours before using it ! Don't keep trying to start the bike with a knackered battery, you'll burn the starter solenoid out

The connecter you normally get with the optimate will fit nicely under the seat hump if you feed the wires either side of alloy bar under the seat hump it stops it falling down into the bikes internals

its doing it with a fully charged (albeit ropey) battery.

my solenoid packed in. I put a screw driver across the terminals of the solenoid and started it that way.

Wouldn't recomend it though, but it does get you going if your stuck.

no comments please about the scouser hotwiring his bike

:lol... nice one, i use to do that on my old escort :lol

Hows it going dolestar , have you got it fixed m8 .

i havent been able to get a new battery yet, but ive wd40'd the contact on the solonoid which seems to have solved it (for now!).

Im riding to Torquay tomorrow - so a good long run should blow some cobwebs away - though im taking the charger just in case lol.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hope it goes ok m8, at least your getting to the root of the problem and it sounds like its either your battery aint keeping its charge or the solonoid is at fault. Happy riding , hope to get out on mine soon too when the turkey has gone down :thumbup
