Correct starting procedure

I have managed to fit the YTX 14BS battery in my 04. It now starts with a minimal press of the start button and jumps straight into life. I don't even need to blip the throttle.

I have read on the AF1 forum that this is good, and will save wear on the sprag clutch.

My question is: IS THAT RIGHT:confused:confused

i dont use any throttle at all, every time i have it has only caused problems.
just hold the button in til its running, all that should be needed

I always thought that blip wasn't too good, use the trim/fast Idle for cold starting. But dont quote me. Am most likely wrong

It has an auto choke on the 04. However the battery is miles better, no need to even look at the throttle:thumbup

Do not touch the throttle on start up on the older or newer style bikes otherwise sprag clutch problems can occur. On older style Mille's just use the cold start lever, newer models have auto cold start

Sort of right. Sprag clutch breakdowns occur because of continuous cranking. Attempting to start repeatedly without success will inevitably lead to a failure of 1 of the 3 parts that comprise the sprag clutch. Just about $300 in parts to repair...the hard part is removing the flywheel to get to it. Requires heating with a torch...highly recommended that you take it to a pro for this.

So...older mille's...best way to start is to bring the cold start lever towards you about 2 mil...or so that you end up around 2000rpm after it starts.

Newer mille's...hold start button until it starts...should be no longer than 4 seconds.

Its 2 micro seconds with my new BTX 14 B battery fitted:thumbup

Beau1K, here in the UK, due to cold ambient air temperatures, cold start on older RSV Mille's generally requires full use of the cold start lever :thumbup

DAMN!

I'd recommend keeping the bike in a heated garage then ;)
