the question is if I remove the clutch slave is oil going to leak on to my garage floor?
my clutch fluid is starting to go black so I want to drain the fluid remove the slave and check any seals to see if oil is getting in to the fluid but want to know if I need to drain the engine oil first
cheers

Of course you must drain all engine oil, and if uou have a car you must drain that oil also. .. and ig neighbours have cars you must also drain them sd well. .

You need to first, remove the kidney from your 1st born child, lay that on your garage floor. .. that will keep it clean. ..

Erm...... Tadts

Dont worry.... black fluid is normal.
If you change it, it will go black again...

:)

so what makes it go black, on other bikes I've had there has been a seal around the clutch push rod to stop engine oil getting to the slave cylinder and stopping contamination of the clutch fluid, some Suzuki's used to get chain lube into the clutch fluid because the slave cylinder was right next to the front sprocket but this isn't the case with the ape so back to the question again, is there engine oil behind the slave cylinder (that could be turning the clutch fluid black)
there no need for kidneys to be placed anywhere

You could change the seal and the fluid will still go black, but feel free to try and cure it.
There is no need to drain the engine oil to remove the clutch cylinder.
They do it from new.

I've ad mine from new in 08 and its only just gone black making me think something has only just failed

having a bad day mate :lol

If black fluid really annoys you, strip the s/cyl down, clean properly and re-assemble coating the inner seal with silicone.
It won't stop it comlpetely, but will go a long way to keeping your fluid looking spangly.
Most don't bother, as has been said, other than the cosmetics of it, there isn't a problem.

ok cheers for the links guys, looks like its more a chemical reaction rather than oil contamination so as you've all said there is nothing I can do to stop this, I've changed the fluid for new but looks like I might try an aftermarket slave cylinder
thanks for the reply's fellas, garry how's the hangover, I'm guessing you were pissed last night

I replaced mine with an mpl one..... that does it too !

Get one of those sweat band type covers if it gets on yr ****...

:)

:+:

I have MPL also.
It's the seal/aluminium causing the discolouration....as felix has said...the aftermarket ones are the same.
the only partial fix is to coat the seal in silicone.
I use Shinetsu G-40M

fair one gonna have to learn not to look at it
