Slave cylinder piston

Good point, there is nothing like a good picture and that was nothing like a good picture!
Pics to follow:pirate

Fitting of modified/updated/redesigned/Peter slave cylinder piston and seals

A leaking piston seal mixed with chain lube did this:
picture.php

The Slave cylinder is so close to the chain that any leak will damage said chain - worth keeping an eye on. I have been involved in the 'notothebikeparkingcharges' in london and it was on the slow, stop, start demo's that the cylinder started leaking

The original piston [on the right] is a real hash by comparison to this new one.

No spring is required now! Just push it in!
picture.php

Goes in so easy - a gentle push - sorted. [no messing around with keeping it square in a clamp and forcing it in - just do it by hand with a little fluid as lube]
picture.php

Sorted - will jet wash it later

Be interested to see how this works out, as 'O' rings are not designed for this purpose. Cup seals are used for a reason, however it must be worth a try :thumbup

'O' Rings

Yes you are correct in that - so we are testing for a few thousand miles to see how it goes.
We also have 'X' rings to try, :doug in theory they should be a 'belt and braces' solution but the 'O' rings are the first stage in the appraisal.
So far, so good

Getting better?
Slave working well [no comments please]

Mechanicals and body looking better [the bike, not me!]
Feels great [and] no leaks!

Roll on the weekend ............

Oh dear, wrong bike!

Again in terms of testing terribly uneventful.
Although more rain testing for tomorrow, and its been getting a bit chilly the past few nights (around 2~4 deg C) so a good test for cold weather use (well before the engine heats up).
Up to around 400 miles so far, will keep you guys posted.

Theoretically the o-rings can be used in applications with maximum pressures of around 3000psi in a reciprocating setup. (for Shore 70)
We shall see though, the gland design is a compromise between being too loose and wearing on the gland surface or being too tight and wearing on the cylinder surface.

Testing times!

Ah well, it looked bright and warm. In reality it was about 3 degrees. I am running Diablo Corsa's 111's. can't get any heat into them. Maybe I should get another pair of wheels and fit 'winter tyres' on them? Got them at the end of summer - still not scrubbed in :dunno
The new slave piston and seals are working great. Due to the old one leaking I was having to pull the lever back further so this new set up is great. Changing gear is smoother and easier. And as a bonus the chain stay's clean and sidestand dry! :thumbup

Certainly not the optimal temperature.
At least summer IS getting closer with every day :biggrin
Good to know that everything is holding up well so far.
Again another good test of the cold weather performance of the seals.
Thanks for the update :thumbup

Hello Peter and a Happy New Year, hope it is a good one

The piston and seals are frustratingly stable - very limited riding, weather is -10 degrees at my bungalow [middle of the Shropshire countryside] Still going to try the X rings in the summer :biggrin

Hope all is well - here comes the summer :doug

Interex, I would be very interested in one. (See my comment on the 'solenoid failure, beware' thread.)

Ok, I've just read all this.....

..all of it!

To the Mille owner whose slave isn't leaking/failing, what is the benefit?

This seems an ideal replacement if the original fails, but is there a performance benefit?
(i.e. does it make it easier for my girly hands? My poxy MPL cylinder doesn't seem to have helped, but then I 've not actually ridden the bike yet.)

Jon, you ask re the benefit, well reliability is quite high on my list? From my perspective engineering integrity is everything. Get that right and the rest will follow [Twist Of The Wrist principle] I hate poor engineering or design and this design appealed to me as it is simple, double secure and should minimise wear on the slave bore and piston. I understand the 'issue' regarding the pressure required but I find the 'work out' helps me when I am on the climbing wall [and fighting with the kids - and wife!] The only downside I have is having to exercise my other hand using a hand compressor tool [no comments please!]
I have spent most of my time on Jap bikes [GSXR's Blade's, ZZR's etc.] but I find the Ape clutch somewhat refreshing. It is only when I am on a Demo [notothebikeparkingtax] that it becomes a pain in the £%$". I spose the bottom line is - I like something that [1] Works [2] Is a reasonable cost [3] Has design and manufacturing integrity [4] I can forget.

You have a point with your comment '..all of it!' The thread does go on a bit! but then this is an ongoing project and the people involved want it to be right. It is good if a company will replace an item but it is better if when a part is replaced you can then forget it - ?

There is a substantive difference in price between a MPL kit and this piston kit - as for reliability - this is a testing time - and time and miles alone will tell if it is a viable project for Mille owners.

Ride safe [and fast]

Hope everyone had a happy new year.
Now that the holiday madness is over, perhaps things will pick up a bit. :biggrin

Phill, it has been frustratingly uneventful. The thing just works. Which tempts me to go ahead with production, although I know a little more testing would be a the best thing to do.

If you do decide to start selling these how much are you looking at? It definitely sounds like it would be worth the investment.

Are you US based :dunno -if so you need to talk to interex250 [on this site]
Or look at the begining of this thread [seems like years ago]:exclamation for a costing. Once tested to our satisfaction I may end up keeping a few in stock in the UK to speed up the process and delivery :thumbup I think it ticks all the boxes and is super value.

Please excuse my ignorance but is this the reason that my clutch keeps fading and i have to bleed it through on a regular basis?

If so i'd be a good test for you.

Can you look back on this thread - I had the same problem - fading clutch - regular bleeding. Well, the slave was leaking. I was in touch with interex2050 over a modified piston and seal - The thread will tell you the rest. Can you check if the chain and gearbox sprocket is covered with a black slime :puke and it is leaking onto the sidestand. If so you need a new seal/piston. Have a word with interex2050
Hope you get sorted :thumbup
