Hi Peter
Great - looking forward to trying them out!
Browsing though the RSV zone I noticed your previous comments and electrical calculations - a bit beyond me - You do know your stuff!
Your mind works a little like my brothers - a problem? then find a way to redesign and manufacturer an improved solution?
My mind - a problem - find a way to ride round it. understand it, dominate it.
Both are good.
I shall look forward to assessing and photographing any wear or otherwise. It does seem unacceptable that a manufacturer produces a product with a limited life when a superior item is available that should [in theory] last for years and years.
Riders who look at the design and riders that look at the effect both have a vital input to future item integrity. If this works [and it should] there will be many knocking on your door - well done mate.
Let me know when you want a posting address, I am quite happy to pay the costs

Got a nice little delivery in the mail today...

So far so good... Stay tuned for more updates on testing.

Phill,
you will have a PM in a few minutes...

And REV-C is born...

The little Unimat Lathe is fueled by pure unadultered rage...
Making a slight modification was far more exciting than one would have hoped.

i'd also be interested in this mod, seems like an awesome piece of kit, whats the difference on the newer version ??

The replacement piston no longer uses the spring... It shouldn't have any adverse effects, and if there are some oddities the testing will reveal this.
As for cost, I was thinking $35 USD (~ £22, ~ €24). Which is pretty close to what a replacement seal costs from Aprilia (at least over here).
The production pieces will be much nicer, as they won't be turned by hand. They will be polished then hard anodized.
Rev-A had a fancy seal for the clutch actuation shaft
Rev-B the fancy seal was replaced with something simpler
Rev-C some changes were made to the glad design for easier installation and less wear on the piston seals

Thanks for all the support guys!
More to come soon.

Added note:
I installed the latest revision today, installation was MUCH easier (matter of just popping it in). About 30 miles later and everything is still dandy.

Great project!!
What is the use of 2 seal`s ?
If one fails the second is a backup or what ?
Wy not use a openseal that opens up under pressure like in the philips coffee pad machine?

The second seal is there for several reasons...

-It acts as a dust seal (or wiper) for the primary seal, preventing grit from causing premature wear.

-The secondary purpose is to prevent the piston from contacting the cylinder wall, causing excessive wear on the finish. This keeps the piston concentric in the cylinder at all times.

-Lastly it can function as a backup seal if the primary leaks.

An open seal would have been an alternative, but the stock unit used an expanding seal... And that does not cope too well.

Although visually it looks to be in good shape... it could be a matter or tolerances or the piston get misaligned enough to cause an uneven seal.

Clutch Slave Cylinder

I am very interested in your improved slave cylinder as I have a couple of Milles that dirty their fresh clutch fluid immediately. When you have some ready how do I contact you?
thanks, Paul

I had a lovely run out on the B645 yesterday, the road was really clean after the heavy rain and I could spud on a bit quicker than November usually permits. Sadly the clutch slave cylinder was leaking when I got home (it was probably leaking when I set off, but it's properly noticeable now).

Do you have any replacement pistons for sale? A replacement seal is about £16 delivered on evil bay, so I'd be interested in a more potentially more permanent fix for a bit more cash. Having previously run fairly old Ducatis the clutch on the RSV doesn't appear to be heavy ebnough to warrant the expense of an MPL.

I've done product testing before (Cougar Red heads & powervalves on 2 strokes) and at least this is unlikely to result in any broken bones!

Graveltrap,
There is still a bit of testing to do before I would be comfortable starting production. If everything goes well, the first batch should be good to go by the end of the year.
P.S. you have a PM

Testing has been quite dull... so far so good.
Need to work on getting more miles on it.

Piston and seals arrived today. :doug
Peter, the workmanship is superb - second to none.
Will fit the 'O' ring version tonight, be out on the road at the weekend.
Am also looking forward to trying the 'X' rings - almost hope the 'O' rings will fail - though that looks very very unlikely!
The piston is so light, the weight is in grams not ounces. It really is a well a engineered product :thumbup

Excellent!
Thank you very much :biggrin
In some ways I hope so too, they are much fancier.
I hope the install went smoothly.
Mine is still going, really rather uneventful.

Slave cylinder piston

Hi Peter
Things turned manic busy after our last pm. I have only just fitted the piston! - I am hoping a few pics will be on the RSV Zone soon via my modified computer!
I have NEVER fitted a piston that went in as easy, bled as easy and worked so quickly as yours!
It worked like new within minutes, can't wait to get out
