Clutch and Brake fluid types??

Hi guys
Quick question that may be very silly but when topping up brake and clutch fluids it says to use DOT 5.1 which is compatable with later versions of DOT 4, but do not use DOT 5.

Can i just top it up with the DOT 4 that i already have or is it important that i get DOT 5.1?

Thhis is all abit gobbledegook to me!

If you currently have Dot 4 in the system mate, then i would top up with the same...if you are thinking of flushing new fluid thru, then i would go with the 5.1 ( i currently run and is tops)...don't ever let Dot 5 silicone near your brake or clutch system matey. Cheers

i second that, brembo recommend dot 5.1. The difference i think it is negligable but the 5.1 may very slightly be better at tolerating inc. temp in the rear brake master.

Aprilia says use Dot 4 not 5.1.

"For this operation, use DOT 4 oil from sealed containers; do not use DOT 5.0 or DOT 5.1 oils since the first damages system seals while the second, though compatible, is more hygroscopic and can thus cause vapour lock if not properly preserved."

This from the Aprilia Service Bulletin on the rear brake issue

don't mix so if you're unsure you'll need to flush through

dot 5.1 is the correct brake fuld to use on both clutch and brakes

Dot 5.1 has a higher boiling point than Dot 4, 270 C against 230 C, but is much more hygroscopic ( absorbs water faster and hence needs changing much more often ) as Doug and Aus say.

You can mix the two, but under normal operating conditions DOT4 is perfectly adequate.

DO NOT USE DOT 5.0 it is silicone based and again as Doug says will eat your seals in the braking system.

agree to stay away from dot 5
changed from 4 to 5.1 and seemed to improve clutch
front brakes fantastic
rear, i don't care what i put in its shi**e

Dot 5.o is silicone based and do not mix with dot 4 or 5.1.
so keep away from dot 5.0

Brembo Lcf 600 for me.

601 degrees boiling point.

Technically a Racing fluid but Ferrari supply it in all their cars so that's good enough for me
