Clutch and Brake fluid on clock surround? WTF?

So... I picked up my Mille on Saturday, rode it home, and didn't notice this. Then later that day when I got back on it, I noticed it. There was clutch fluid on the top lip of the clock surround... I assumed I hadn't noticed it when I picked it up and ignored it. Thought nothing of it.

Then today, longish ride, no fluid anywhere, and just now I went to put it away and again, brake fluid AND clutch fluid on the clock surround and inside the fairing by the screen. It's not happening while I'm riding, it seems to be happening AFTER rides?

There's a little bit of clutch and brake fluid on the res caps but they're both done up tight.

It's been standing for a very long time, could it be perished seals in the res caps maybe? It just seems to be squirting out, maybe while it's cooling down or something?

It's a Y reg by the way, 2000 model though I believe.

Any help would be much appreciated, this is most bizarre :/ Is it common?

They are sealed reservoirs but in this heat the fluid expands so much that it can bypass the seals.

It does tend to spray out in a mist and usually happens when the bike is parked up after a run and the engine heat soaks in to the ancillaries. (Brake and clutch lines)

Get yourself some reservoir socks, Mahoney is doing a group buy get some on order.

Its certainly not common but I could believe that the seal in the cap has had it or that the tubes between the cylinder and resovoir have a split in them (heard of this before).
Another possibility although a bit weird is that the the resovoir's are too full and when you stop the latent heat in the disk's causes them to expand pushing the pads back a bit and thus forcing the fluid out of the top.

Cheers guys, I'll look into all of those things. They didn't look too full, but were right up at the max lines. The little hoses up to the reservoirs look a little on the old side, maybe a bit dry and cracked so I'll look into swapping them out if it carries on.

I shall look into the socks :D

Cheers again, many more questions to come!

Kiwi, I'm in Southend as well so look out for me wobbling around on my red 2000 mille :D

LOL that'll be two Southenders wobbling around then. :nana

You free tomorrow mate, few guys popping over to Mahoneys in Braintree to have Griff fettle their bikes? (I'm going cause someone mentioned free cakes :doug)

if you still have rubber hoses get them changed for braided ones mate, if they are at max they are probably overfilled, again a sock would be good to stop this stuff spraying all over, it will wreck paint and plastics if left

Are you sure its clutch and brake fluid. I ask this because I had a similar problem and it turned out to be water from the radiator ! The top bracket on the rads tend to split the weld and weep fluid. Its worth checking mate :dunno

I'm sure it's not coolant, it's too high up for that I think and I don't see how it'd get there. I'll look into it though. I'll take a little bit of fluid out of each res and give it a blat later on, see if it continues. If it does I'll get some socks and change the little hoses.

Cheers guys :)

Ye Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar a fellow Sarfender, whereabouts (I'll make sure to stay away :biggrin)

If you are worried about it you could always pop over to my place and we can take a look ......................
