Over the last week my bike has tripped itself when starting making the oddo reset and the clocks go back to kmh.

I press the start button and it kind of goes "plurgh..." then i press it again and fires fine albiet with alien kmh speed settings lol.

Any ideas?? i keep the bike on an opti pretty much all the time now.

Dolestar, if you are switching the optimate OFF before you replug it into your bike then switching it on once connected as is the correct proceedure so that the optimate resets itself otherwise it won't charge, then it's your battery that's fubar

hi legs, i am following the correct procedure. The battery is only a month or two old, and its not that theres not enough charge to fire it up - theres plenty!

The clocks reset themselves when there is low battery voltage. If the bike goes "plurgh" when you hit the starter button and the clocks reset themselves, then starts on the second press then something is wrong.

Did you upgrade to a YTX14BS battery or keep to the original YTX12BS spec. Could be a duff cell in the new battery. Are the battery terminals tight and lightly greased? Switch off the optimate at the mains plug and leave for 30 seconds before reconnecting it to the bike and then switching back on. Does the opimate go through it's charging procedure with the led's turning from a flashing green to a constant green led after an hour or so?

Just a thought if all else is ok, there may be a resistance within the starter solenoid and maybe a pointer towards a failure which could be causing this problem. They are a known week point. Someone else with more knowledge may know more on this than me though

Hi Dolestar,

I had exactly the same problem a couple of months ago. Assuming all the other components re battery and terminals don't apply I found one of the terminals on my starter solenoid was very loose. Much less than finger tight. While tackling that I replaced the solenoid with a Yamaha R1 solenoid which is a direct replacement (10 minutes job). It's better and cheaper (approx £28) than the Aprilia part. Yam Pt no 4KD-81940-00.
Earlier last year I fitted a 14AH battery so I knew it wasn't that.

Not had any starting problems since then.

i used to have this problem when recently off a IL4, I used to jump on the mille turnthe key and push start before the fuel pump etc had primed, this would revert the clocks etc. Now I wait a second or two from key turn untill I thumb the starter. Its abitch when you lose yer last top speed recorded...esp when it takes all of 10 mins on the next run to top it off again!!! ha ha
cheers]

My clocks will reset if I have the lights on whilst starting her up.. and, on the odd occasion it wont spin over.
I do not use an optimate, but I do use my bike every dayish.

mines doing this about once a week now, im using it every day but just occasionally it does a "plurgh" resets the clocks, speedo goes mad for a few seconds and when i press the starter again it fires up fine, if i put it on the trickle charger it shows full charge in about 5 -10 mins so im pretty sure the battery is fine

i try to fire it, with lights off and clutch in every time so god knows whats going on

but its doing my head in now

matey, if you are a bit quick pushing starter after turning key on (ie-before the fuel pump primes) it also does the resetting malarky.
I turn key then wait 4 secs or so before pushing starter and it hasnt done it fer a while.

As above really, unfortunately I don't have the option of having the lights off as mine is an 03, but I've just put a HID headlight in and that draws significantly less current than a standard lamp so that should help.

I have a new battery (not fitted) and new yam starter solenoid (not fitted) and i turn lights off to start bike cos the battery is shagged and the optimate is the only thing keeping it alive.

Dolestar- have you tested the new battery?

I had same problem with a "new" westco battery a few months back it was faulty batch , they changed it no problem worth checking if it is a westco

Rawly

ref the headlight on while starting mines an 03 so can't turn them off anyone fitted a separate switch to keep them off just while starting ??
