Carbon looking tired, Re-resin?

Well now winter is here after the new year i am gonna strip the bike down for a good going over. The bike is mint from the last owner, But since buying the bike in mid May i havent used it at all and havent really done anything to it, Its been looked after, wash and polished and polished.

But i wanna put my small stamp on it, But first i wanna sort the carbon out on it. The front fender looks alittle tired in places. I see you cant just lacquer carbon with a rattle can.

So was wondering if i could buy the resin that you use to set the carbon. Just rub the exsesting carbon down abit for the new resin to bond to. Is this possible?.

Thanks

Luke

Matt, I tryed that mate and the lacquer doesnt take to the carbon, I used 800W&D then used panal wipe and sprayed, But the lacquer just the crowd dispersed like there was silicone/oil on there which there was nothing on there.

The resin you can buy from Carbon Mods looks like it should do it. Just mix up and apply then let it set and recoat.

Nope tryed everything mate. I had a look into it and found that Carbon cant be lacquered. It can only be re-resin'ed (is that a word) to get the gloss back.

Very odd mate have done loads in carbon and almost always lacquer it after and never had any probs

Strange then!.

Did you just use normal rattle can lacquer?. I have done spraying before and no how to prep well. But the fender and hugger just wont do anything i want it to. It reacts with something.

Will get picture...

if you do re resin it its gunna be a lot of work to get it looking shiney again
it would take a few days with all the time it takes for the resin to go off the flat it down then more resin, then you will need a polishing mop to get a propper shine

Ye i know it takes some time to get it looking well. But its the only way i can think of TBH. Might try it again with lacquer and see. But i dont understand why it just wont take to it.

I went over my carbon mudguard and hugger with wet and dry and then normal rattle can lacquer and they came up pretty well. Only thing I can think of is maybe yours have traces of silicone based polish on them making the lacquer pickle up? When I flatted mine I used warm water and washing up liquid to remove all traces of any old polish.

had the hugger and the ears done at work with 2 pack laquer . did have probs with the hugger fish eyeing i think its where the weave of the carbon meet ie in the corners did it twice and 2nd time was less noticable . the ears also did it but we let them dry and them put a thick coat on and they are spot on .have some pics will try to put them in my garage the mudguard is next , did a art ex can with can spray and it was fine

Thats what mine is doing "fish eyeing". I gave it another go today, And looks better. Might give it another one tomorrow. I think it just takes the look of the bike. Would like to get a new fender and hugger, But i am not paying that kind of money for it.

its a very weird thing i think you have to put it on thick just before it starts to run if it does just let it go and flat it off and buff off look at the pics in my garage my hugger was peeling and flatter than a flat thing it may take a few coats to get rid of the fish eyes flat it very lightly in between coats

Looks well. Will keep going with it. The fender has come up pretty well on the top part, But the side parts near the lower forks are having come out that well. Will give it another tomorrow then leave it for a few days then give it a clay and alittle compound and then an LSP should do the trick!.

This was done in 2k lacquer

This took about 8 hours of work but just polished the resin

when I lacquered the mirror cover the lacquer was running off the edge lol
but when it went off it was just a very quick flat and polish

If i ever get runs i flood it and let it run off the edge:eek:

Looks good Matt. Shame mine doesnt do the same thing. It just seems to "fish eye". But it looks better than what it did before. Maybe just need to keep going. Will flat it down alittle tomorrow and another few coats.

Hi did my carbon wind deflectors today, did them with 800 grade wet and dry in hot soapy water, let them dry next to a radiator wiped them off with panel prep.
gave them one coat of 2k laquer, put them in the airing cupboard to dry in the warm for 4 hours then flatted them with 1400 wet and dry quick wipe of panel prep and another coat of 2k laquer, forgot to add that i wore a pair of latex gloves whilst handling them.
Front mud guard tomorrow, hope this helps( laquer came in a rattle can).
