Went to North Wales on sunday with a few friends, when I left I was on 6 points and decided to stick to 30,40 and 50 religiously, going past Bala Brunstrom had a surprise party waiting for me, the copper jumped into the road and went through our bikes with a toothcomb, jobsworth said my rear tyre was .85mm of tread against the legal 1mm, so I am now the proud owner of 9 points.

I have no choice other than to sell up and take it easy as my licence is needed for work (60,000 miles per year)
So I am fooked

Keep it safe guys and stay out of Wales if you have
Cans £30
Small plate £30
Dark visor £30
Dodgy tyres 3 points each and £30

My group can testify to all the above fines.

Welcome to Wales eh :jack

Not all coppers in Wales are ******s mate, just the ******s that work for Brunstrum. Illegal plates will get you £30 with most forces, cans - debateable, dark visor - use your common and carry a clear one, dodgy tyres? Sorry I wouldn't ride with them on the bike for fear of a puncture miles from home.
Oh, and no I'm not in the job, have had many points in the past but have learnt to try and play them at their own game now!!

If you carry a clear visor will they let you off a fine :dunno I have a dark visor tear off so I can just take it off and roll it up in my pocket when the light gets so bad...

I am not anti police at all, I have had loads of rows with folk in the past about defending them,
On this occasion this guy showed zero tolerance, my tyre was .006" of an inch under the limit which is about a hair and a half thick, common sence and a bolocking would have done the job, I did not leave home knowing it was illegal. I peaded with him that these points were life changing for me and I wold have to sel the bike could he reconsider, he offered to reconsider the front too as he was sure he could find that to be illegal too.

He would not budge, this is the same guy who rode past us in a cafe on his bike whilst using a walkie talkie, my mate asked him about it and he said it was legal to do that.

I spoke to two coppers a few weeks back at the Ponderosa cafe and they made it very clear that Brunstrom has had it in for bikers for long time and that they are told on a regular basis to target us .( these two very actually ok and let my mate off with a warning about a very small rear plate !!! )
It still amazes me that the man still has a job given the crap he spouts , even a lot of his own force don't like him

Rawly

I cant believe he could prove such a tiny amount, is a tread gauge really that accurate. :confused

Im just wondering if it is worth seeking a second opinion or is it too late

Unfortuanately there are power seekers in all walks of life who's only self satisfaction is to be in complete control and will not budge an inch as this they see as a sign of weekness in themselves. It's a classic mark of insecurity. In their eyes they can also do no wrong. They will alway be right. Quite a few of these character types end up as police officers although this isn't a generalisation i am making.

Posh, unlucky on meeting this self centred *****. Common sense would provial for normal folk but alas these people are ego controlled and nothing will change them. Ride the storm on the points issue and look forward to riding again maybe on that new RSV4 in a few years :thumbup

How the hell was his gauge that accurate FFS? I would go the usual route of requesting a calibration certificate etc.
Did he check the tread in one place or several?
Did he issue you with a FP notice or did he inform you of his intention to provide the evidence to CPS for consideration for prosecution. If the latter, did he read you your rights? If not, illegal.
Finally how did he fine you £30 for your tyre? It's a fine of up to £2500 and 3 points.

They rely on shock and awe tactics , you are so stunned that you wont fight what ever penalties they hand out, when in fact they are themselves breaking the law by the way in which the dealt with you.
Its arseholes like them that give the police a bad name (when in fact the majority are quite reasonable) , I wonder how they would react if I started fining them for every credit card transaction ?.
It also shows just how toothless MAG & BMF are , the 2 organisations that should be targetting this victumisation and yet are doing nothing.

mini rant over - breathe

This copper sounds like a tool bag, PJ i would try and find out about calibration and whether you can appeal mate, i have never been done for a dark visor in all the years i have been riding and my dark visor never comes off my lid, nor no plate nor extremely loud cans.

Explains my continued absence from anywhere vaguely Welsh....shame as it's a beautiful Country!

Also note that the legal limit of tyre tread depth in the UK for motorcycles over 50cc is 1mm across 3/4 of the width of the tread pattern and with visible tread on the remaining 1/4.

Sorrybarryrs, I have to disagree with you there mate;
"Any vehicle with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or gross train weight (GTW) over 3500kgs or a motorcycle above 50cc must, either:

1) The grooves of the tread pattern must have a depth of a least 1 mm throughout a continuous band measuring at least three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre, OR
2) if the grooves of the original tread pattern of the tyre do not extend beyond three-quarters of the breadth of the tread (i.e. common with motorcycle tyres) any groove of the original pattern must have a minimum depth of at least 1 mm.

At the end of the day, these tactics don't do the police and the authorities any favours..They rely on the general publics support, so picking people up on trivial little things like this will backfire eventually..

Brunstrom is biased against bikers no doubt, but surely that goes against the police doctrine of treating everyone the same..Bet he wouldn't dare to target Muslims the same way.

I got that from http://www.tyresafe.org/data/files/TyreSafe Motorcycle.pdf :dunno
