Getting pretty fed up of this bike.

Went out yesterday and when I came to start it up again it did the same as before. Clicking noise on the press of the starter button and would not fire up. A guy had to push me to bump start it.

I had this a couple of months ago.. Changed the battery to a higher current one and fitted a new starter relay. All has been okay upto yesterday.

The chap who helped me bump start it said the condensation in the clocks may have an effect on the starter system. Could this be true?

I am now on the verge of part exchanging it. Only had it since Nov 11. New speed sensor, back brake problems, new fork base because the previous person overtightened the clamp bolts and new seals and oil on both forks £350. New battery, new starter relay, new plugs!!

Can't trust taking it out and not starting again.

Any advice please?

Not stripped the bike down yet, but it fires up occasionally from the starter button! I had this problem a couple of months ago. Changed the battery and starter relay, then it was okay. Where does the earth go to the frame please? Could it be that or the damp in the dash.

hehm had the same problem on mine. it was the + on the starter motor. the insulation went bad and usually current got to - rather than the starter rotor. i sorted it with shrink wrap :)

Done the battery check, thats fine.

The stator cable I did the ohms test on the three yellow cables that go into the brown block. Reading 0.005 ! The voltage test I did the reading was 60 v plus when the revs were above 4000rpm. The bike would not start on the starter switch but did when I put a screw driver across the starter relay terminals. All the block connectors are fine.

Anymore suggestions please?

The relay clicks yes. Sometimes it fires up on the push of the switch and sometimes does not, strange. The relay was changed only a couple of months ago also. Where is the ground wire connections please? Gen 2.

why don't you take the bike over to Aprilia Perfomance and get Griff to put the bike onto the Axone, that way you can find out the exact fault and fix it correctly?!

This bloody bike, I disconnected every connector then sprayed with GT85, now it fires up again. All the connectors were dry, no sign of any corrosion. Can't understand it!

Low and behold, not working again. sometimes it fires up on the starter button then others I need to use a screw driver across the starter relay to short it out!

The earth straps seem okay, I am going to run another cable from the battery negative to the frame, maybe that will help!

surely it must be either the relay or the starter button/wires to and from it if it starts when you make the connection with a screwdriver!

Its been running fine since changing the battery and starter relay for the last 2 months, then playing up again. I have put to cable from the frame to the negative on the battery, it appears to be firing up again! If it does it again, surely not a new relay again, its only been two months since the last one!

if the relay is just clicking it is because it is not getting enough voltage.. check the voltage across the battery whilst cranking.. you need a reading under load to give you an idea as to how healthy the battery is atm.. if it drops close to or below 10v whilst cranking then the battery is knackered or needs a good charge.. when you bought the battery, did you check the voltage across the terminals i think it has to read atleast 12.4v otherwise you need to put it on charge for between 6 to 8 ours at 4 amps.. if you do not do this it drastically reduces the life span of the battery..

also what amperes is your starter relay rated to?

if the relay is clicking it means it is working, when a relay does nothing that's when you start to think about replacing it after ensuring your battery has sufficient charge under load

Poor negatives on the bike or part of the control circuit to the starter relay is partially short circuiting. Starter motor brush gear could be worn unless it starts when shorting the relay then this won't be the case. Starter button could well be goosed....water,dirt ingress causing high resistance. What ever you do don't use GT85 or similar as these type of products have ptfe etc that acts as an electrical insulator which will cause you nothing but bother....that's how I knacked my starter spraying that stuff about! Use proper electrical contact cleaner.

The battery is fine, kicking out 14+ v. Dave, I have sprayed and drowned all the contacts with GT85, have used it for years on other bikes with no problems, but I take your point with PTFE. I will get some electrical contact cleaner. It appears to be working at the moment but for how long?
