Bike won't rev past 9000rpm

I've owned my 2000 rsv r for about 6 months. I thought it was running fine until my brother bought one. His bike revs to about 10500rpm but mine wont rev past 9000rpm.
I have changed the plugs, air filter and checked the valve clearances. I've also changed the eprom chip back to standard but nothing has made any difference.
Has anyone had a similar problem? or give me any advice what to check next?

I should have said it is fully derestricted. air box plate removed, ECU wire cut and race can fitted.
Thanks andy

is the rev limit set correct :dunno some people do set them at a lower rev limit mine is set to 10'500 rpm

My 2006 bike did this when its ignition coils were on its way out. Then it only ran on one cylinder when it finally packed in.

Def try to set the rev limit manually, its in the front of the manual, think you press and hold 'c' button for 3 secs then keep tapping it to set the rev limit

As far as I know that only changes at what point the red indicator light on the rev counter comes on and doesn't actually change or set the rev limit. If you take the battery off and it resets to 6000rpm you can still rev straight through it with the light flashing away at you squire.

Will the bike rev above 9000rpm when not under load? i.e when it is in neutral? :dunno

A Caterpillar says, the flashing LED light is no more than that, it is not a rev limit adjustment light. Your ECU takes care of the rev limit which is factory set at 10500 rpm i think. You just adjust the LED to flash to warn you you are approaching the rev limiter.

As to your problem. It'll be a case of checking one thing at a time. I'dd check throttle body sync and set up CO next. Also check your throttle position sensor is correctly set.

Mate, don't know if this helps, i had a 750 SRAD and it wouldn't rev past 9,000 whilst riding or in neutral. Spent a fortune trying to fix, turned out to be the valve timing, the cam chain had jumped a few teeth because the automatic cam chain adjust was knackered. Suzuki main dealer replace the cam chain adjuster with a manual one, over tightened it and the cam chain ate through the cam chain guides and bang, one knackered SRAD engine. Good luck :thumbup

I've fixed it.
After another day in the garage it turned out to be the plug caps. It now revs to 11000rpm. Aprilia main agent wanted £90 for four caps. I fitted ngk replacements for £16
Thanks for the advice

Plug caps??

That was well diagnosed, never thought that the plug caps would limit that much performance!!

Where they arcing on the sparkplugs? if so it possibly be a good idea to change the plugs as well.

Nice fix fearn.:doug

what do you mean plug caps????
the little metal screw cap on top of the plug or the plug lead

He means the HT leads from coils to plugs. They can get a bad contact and or cracks in the conductor sections. They either then melt of reduce the voltage. V=IR and all that.

P=VI rofl :D

Glad you sorted your problem out Fearn..be careful revving it out to 11K tho...i wouldn't be doing that too often :D

I hope we don't get any resistance due to the current state of one liners here.
Or from others, it could be, watt is all this about?
