First of all merry christmas to everyone !!!!

I have an early shape RSV. Did the batt & starter solenoid upgrade over summer. Been running like a dream all summer never let me down once !! Bike has been wrapped up warm for the past few months in my garage having not been the weather for riding (hooked up to a optimizer) and now she wont start !!!

Primes up and loads of ummph in the batt but just wont kick in. After about 10 seconds or so get a smell of fuel as if she has flooded out !!

Anyone got any help/advice ??? It would be much appreciated if you did !!

Thanks in advance

Merry Christmas to you too :thumbup

Youv'e flooded it old chap.

Two options

1. Attempt to do a full throttle start
2. Pull the plugs dry them out then put them back in hot (use a hair dryer or similar)

Then try a restart.

YEP.............well flooded!
Ideal if you can get the plugs out, if not leave it as long as possible and try again. It only needs to evaporate the excess fuel. On a car I'd go the full throttle start option but possibly not on a bike.
Good luck.

It's doing it every time tho !!!! I can't get her started at all !! Even after leaving it a few days !!! Tried 6-7 times now !!!

Normally I have the fast idle open full with no throttle and since doing the batt & solenoid upgrades she kicks up first time but since she has been off the road in the garage I can't get her started !!!!!

Defo needs the plugs out and cleaned.
How long has it been sat? Has the fuel gummed up?
Have you tried no choke and full throttle? It's not something I'd do often but may clear things out for you?
Look on the bright side........................now is the time of year for it to happen...................the weather is *****!

Sounds like fueling to me check all your fuel lines and pop up the tank and check the vacuum hoses arent split or loose

UPDATE: Ok so I've checked the fuel lines everything seems ok there. There is about half a tank of fuel in her so I'm guessing it shouldn't be clogged up full of crap. Batt is still on optimiser & full of ummph. It's priming as it should do. And she still won't start !!!!

What next other than a box of matches and a Gerry can of fuel..........

So have you tried a full throttle start ?

I am assuming here that the dash isn't resetting or it slow cranks ?

Yes tried full throttle start !! Dash is exactly as it should be !!! Tried to start her again today and she very very nearly started !!!! But didn't. Could it be that she is just cold in the garage ?

Since over summer doing the batt upgrade & starter solenoid upgrade she started 1st time every time .......... Till being laid up in the garage for winter !!!

Noticed abit of corrosion on the positive side of the batt so I've had the batt off and cleaned both terminals up with abit of sandpaper !! Sprayed with WD40 and put back on really tight !!

Lee, have you cleaned the plugs yet? Easy cure for 80% of difficult starts.
Where are you? If you're close I can pop over and give you a hand.
If all else fails I have some stuff that is used to start spitfire airplanes. It's awesome but may blow me, you and your bike sky high

Update:
Spark plugs are out and this is what they looked like.......... Oh and they were wet which is im assuming from being flooded..............

I would check the water bottle for signs of oil and also check the oil tank for signs of water.

I have noticed some oil in the air box. From doing a quick search on here tho it can be quite normal to have oil in the air box !!

A little oil in the airbox is fine, I am wondering with the **** on the electrode (that looks a lot like rust) if you havn't got a water leak or massive amounts on condensation. There was an issue like this just the other day.

Have you tried turning the bike over without the plugs in ?

Bloody hell Lee...........
It looks like someone stuck a crunchie in your fuel tank.....
.........that's honeycomb on the plug. Take a bite and let us know!
Seriously, I've never seen that before. I'd still bet it'll start with them well cleaned up though. Did the wet on them evaporate like fuel or hang around like water? If it ran well before it's probably condensation and not serious. I'd have a good nosey at your oil and coolant as previously advised just in case.

Condensation ? Ok so my garage has formed a leak and there is water getting into to garage somehow !! Could that be the cause of condensation ??? Could that be the problem ??

I've cleaned the spark plugs up good !!! They were wet with fuel so I'm guessing that's just from being flooded. I've left them out to let the fuel evaporate !! I guess now they are cleaned up I should just put them back in and see if she starts.............
