Thanks, i'll send him a pm, how did you find the jod, anything to look out for?

Pm'd you JAXGTI - when you use the BM sprag, do not put the washer back in - you don't need it and mine came loose and got chewed up - the BM sprag has no locating slots for the washer. You'll see what I mean when you strip it down.
Otherwise, like Kiwi says, plenty of heat on that flywheel (about 10 mins with a blow torch on the centre boss) then crack the puller with a breaker bar.
Best to put something padded and heat proof on the floor underneath the engine so you can soft land the bleedin' hot and heavy flywheel on it if you're wearing a glove.
When you put the side casing back on, coat the generator wire grommet with a bit of gasket goo as they can leak.
Anything else, just ask.
Good luck:thumbup

ANY CHANCE AT ALL SOMEONE COULD DO A GREAT 'HOW TO'WITH PICS, MY PRILLY SEEMS TO CLUNK 9ONCE ONLY) EVERY TIME ON START UP

Just done this repair on my 02 RSV-R,agree with everythink above BUT I would avoid using a naked flame/burner to heat the flywheel up,go buy yourself a cheap hot air gun from B+Q,the type used to burn paint off your windows/doors as they are much easier to control the amount of heat going onto the hub boss, dont forget magnets do not like heat and there is a ring of rare earth magnets in the flywheel for the generator, another good idea is to use a windy gun on the flywheel extractor as its a bit easier to control where the VERY HOT flywheel flys off to when it lets go if something is on the end of it and you get a better impact force than a knuckle bar,

The BMW sprag is a straight forward swop but I stripped it down and just replaced all the old sprag dogs in the original aprilia sprag with the new BMW ones one at a time and used the new spring that way you replace them like for like and dont get one the wrong way around, its easy to do it this way providing the original sprag clutch cage is in good condition which mine was, that way you can use the original aprilia locating circlip thats on the old sprag, its there for a reason boys and that being that it retains/locates the sprag centrally in the sprag bearing housing,if you just plop the BMW one in from the opposite side you will find it just "falls in" with no resistance and wobbles about in the bearing holder :dowhat, with the slotted/circliped aprilia cage you get a "positive" press in fit, dont forget you may also need the large gear that the sprag grips on and the sprag bearing housing to although if its a low mileage "let go" you may just need the sprag bearing its self ( I needed the whole lot 19,000 miles and 250 quids worth :bawling),you can give the large gear and holder a little polish if you wish but not to much, been there, done it,took to much off

sprag

when you say put the sprag in backwards, do you mean so that the arrow on the clutch points the opposite way to the one removed, thanks

john

Sorry to jump on the thread, I too need to change my sprag now if not very near future, Was considering doing the job myself also,
Does anyone know if a workshop manual is available as this will be the first bit of work i've done on this bike?
Thanks.

Yes John. Sounds right. - although can't quite remember how the sprag is marked.

Make one

Find a old CV shaft from a mechanics workshop ( there Rubbish )
Cut the stub of and weld a nut to it !

easy

the original aprilia sprag is marked with a small arrow on its front face (the face with a flange on) the arrow dictates which way the sprag will lock up the obvious being the other way the sprag free wheels, when I say put the BMW sprag on backwards what i mean is you put it into the holder from the other side, the original aprilia sprag can only be removed if you unbolt the carrier from the back of the fly wheel as thats the side with the flange on,the BMW sprag goes in from the front i.e the side you look at once the carrier is bolted back on to the fly wheel,if that make sence ??
