another starting problem

Recently, when the weather is damp my mille takes ages to start. once it has started I can go out and leave it for a few hours and it starts properly. Last week i went to work after having a hard time starting. 9 hrs later it would not start. I gave it full throttle and after about 30 seconds of cranking it fired up and ran perfectly. But not before making some horrendous noises. (spragg clutch?) looked it up in haynes manual. removed starter motor and spun starter gear by hand seems to work normally? I.e. turns freely 1 way and locks in when turned the other. Battery is showing 12.6v on the dash. It is motobatt MB12 XTU kept on trickle charger. I have fitted a Yamaha solenoid 100amp I think. I haven`t done the brown plug mod yet . Could that be anything to do with it. Plugs look ok. correct gap and colour. Any ideas?

Have the same problem with mine, I find that cranking it over and giving it a little bit of throttle at the same time normally results in it starting after a few turns. I don't use the cold start lever as that always seems to make it flood. Once its running I open the cold start lever about a third to keep the revs at about 1800 rpm until its up to temperature.

i tried that but it still takes too many turns. likely to drain the battery. i am more concerned about the noises coming from the engine whilst cranking. suspecting spragg clutch but when turning by hand it seems to behave normally.
need to know if i should be taking it apart or not.

Turning it by hand wont be a good indicator (unfortunately) because you simply cannot put the same force behind it.
If it sounds all horrible and crunchy and cranks slowly then Im afraid you are going to need to check it out.

The volt indicator on the dash is at beast inaccurate and you really need a multimeter.

Poor starting in the damp could be water ingress into the fuel tank or moisture in the electrics.

I have a multimeter somewhere so i will check the battery properly. Gonna have to get my hands dirty then as far as the spragg clutch goes..
I was expecting as much. Thanks for the replies people.

Hi and Welcome

I used to have the starting problems, sometimes it would start and sometimes it would flood. I bought a set of Irradium plugs and made sure the air box was clean and HT leads in good condition. It starts first time even on a low battery and runs even better than before no misfires or flat spots.
