New to forum so "hi!"

I have recently bought an 09 Tuono with Akroprovics fitted and running "Map 2".

If I ride sensibly (boring!) and keep the revs down (not going above 6k) I'm getting around 80 - 85 miles to a £15 tankfull.
If I ride hard (properly!) it's dropping down to 68 - 70 miles!!

Someone has suggested that fitting a more free flowing K+N filter might increase the range as the standard one might have it running a bit rich on map 2.

Anyone got a view on this thought?

Cheers!

Those mpg figures are a bit low TBH. 80-85 miles to a tank is pretty hard riding, and the70 miles is track day stuff. When myself & Mrs Fastard are doing our European thing I see anything up to 150 miles to a tank. I think you need to get the engine mapping checked out, I doubt that simply changing the filter will make that much difference.

Just been out and had a look. Looks like I've got 40T/16T sprockets. Standard I think?

With the Akro's on is the exhaust sensor seeing a higher flow of gasses and shoving more fuel through than necessary? A more free flowing filter in that case is gonna make the problem worse!!

A couple of mates and me are planning a trip up the west coast - across the top - and down the east coast of Scotland soon, at this rate it's gonna cost me a bloody fortune!!

Gonna have to find the nearest Dyno me thinks!

Where about's are you?

It sounds like you need a trip to somewhere that knows Aprilia's, not necessarily a dyno.

Lol I have NEVER had over 80miles (usally comes on about 73) before the fuel light comes on, I ride it hard but no different to any other bike i have owned of similar size, I would have expected 17l to get me 100miles before the fuel light comes on.

Ran out of fuel a few weeks ago and had to push it to the petrol station. It did 83 miles till it died. I was not happy got 18l in it too.

Proof as if proof were needed my MPG is *****, filled to the brim, (just took the pic now) and always reset milage counter.

Dan....Oh dear! I'd better forget the Scottish trip on the Aprilia then and get the Fireblade out, at least that does 100+ miles on a tankfull!!

Batfastard, I'm in Leicester and there is no local Aprilia dealer. I think Birmingham is the nearest official one!!! (Drayton Croft in Hinckley stock 'em but don't think they're official?). A Dyno will at least tell me if the fuelling looks ok won't it?

Having literally just fitted one of these carbon mounting plate and PiperCross airfilter jobbies so cant really comment just yet on MPG. However I have noticed that the RPM has dropped about 300-400rpm for a given speed which tells me the engine isn,t having to work so hard to suck the air thru. ie spinning more freely thus less efort required = less fuel burnt.

Taking 90 mph as an example when i went 15/42 the RPM it increase the rpm typically to 6000rpm. It also reduced MPG by about 2-3 miles a gallon, doesn,t sound much but it was the fifference of 10 miles range approx befor ethe light comes on.

Since fitting the free flowing filter jobbie its dropped RPM back down to levels not much above when on the original gearing.

So will be interesting to see the effect on MPG over the next few tank fuls.

Probably worse cos that induction BAAAAAARRRRRPPPPP on full throttle is mentally adictive!

Rico:
So you've changed the sprockets, why? Was it just for fun factor or some other reason?
Where is the speedo sensor on Tuono's? Does gearing effect the accuracy of the odo? It's hard enough keeping the thing within the law as it is!

I know where there's one of the PiperCross kits for sale, what is the mounting plate jobby for? What does it do that the standard set up doesn't? The K+N filter doesn't come with extras.

New to forum so who's Griff and what can he do for me?

Dan:
if Batfastard is gettin 150 miles to a tank then we may have a problem don't you think?

Batfastard:
what year is your bike? Is it one of the older pre-06 Tuono's? Are they more fuel efficient maybe?

V-twins are thirsty buggers, but 80=85 miles on standard gearing is pretty poor.I guess you are filling up to the brim?I can get 125 miles out of a tankfull quite easy, just cruising about.Normal riding,I usually get 90 miles before the warning light comes on.BTW,I'm on 15/42 gearing.
Have to agree with BF,...sounds like the fuelling needs checking by someone that knows 'Prillas.

Hi Mister, Griff is the Aprilia Guru on here. What he doesn't know about Aprilias prob isn't worth knowing. Very friendly guy apparently and as he's said before ring him as advice is free over the phone (http://www.apriliaperformance.co.uk/).

Gearing doesn't affect the speedo?

Batfastard only gets 150 miles on a run not the way he normally rides. I regularly get 120 - 130 miles but mines an older model and it should go down a little when I get the gearing changed soon. I think batfastard is riding a Factory theseday. Tuono not a Tuoldo. He used to ride up a very tricked up Tuoldo though and I always find what he says spot on. There are a few on here who know what they're talking about. Batfastard is probably only 2nd inline to Griff on tuono knowledge.

Gilo and myself are getting our bikes serviced by Griff on the 18th of the month. He travels around the country sometimes and services bikes in peoples garages. Can't wait for him to give my bike the once over.

"Gearing doesn't affect the speedo?"

Why the question mark? Are you making a statement or asking a question? It's all very confusing!!

If anyone is getting 120 -130 miles to a tank on an '06-on then that's still bloody good going compared to mine and Dans 70 miles.

Hang on,just read the first post again,....if you are only filling up with £15 worth,....thats roughly 10.5l.You can get another 6l in there.(17l tank)
Altering the gearing does not affect the speedo. The sensor works by electrical induction from the disc bolts wizzing past.
Dont ask bay owt technical,by his own admission,he often gets his facts befuddled,....oh,and I think Dan has a rear sprocket the size of a dinner plate,so dont read too much into his mpg figures.:yes :rolleyes ;)

The speed sensor is located on the swing arm beside your back brake caliper. It reads the revolutions of the bolt heads. Therefore its recording how fast the wheel is turning and has no relation to the sprockets fit as its fully independant if that.

Go tak a wee lookie an u will see whit ah mean!

Secondly, the change tae 15/42 sprox smooths out the Tuono low to mid range "lumpiness " that you get. In my opinion its a def mod to do, the difference is quite noticable.

Wi oot bein rude either some o u loons mibbe need tae dae some homework as some basic stuff bein asked here an ahm worried ye micht jist hurt yersels messin aboot.

MPG = MILES TAE THE GALLON!!! 100!!!! u runnin oan the 125 Tuono or whit:lol
