Advice with slipper clutch.

Being a tad new to the real world of big twins and italian exotica, I wondered if some of you seasoned pro`s could spaer a moment and help me to understand a little more.
I`ve searched through the forum archives but can`t really see the answer I`m looking for.:dunno

`05 `05 RSV-R has a slipper clutch. Question is, in `normal` everyday riding will I even notice that fact it has one?:confused
Will I need to change riding style (down-shifting I guess)?
Do they need any maintenance?
Any hints, tips or advice would be fantastic, cheers all:thumbup


(and one I really can`t get my head around,, how the bloody hell can BSB,GP etc boys bump start a bike with a slipper clutch? That really doesn`t compute in my head:dunno)
 
Good questions, I'd like to see 'em answered as well :)

All I know is that the 'slipper clutch' on the RSV isn't a 'real' slipper clutch, but Aprilia's patented PPC (Pneumatic Power Clutch)..
 
I am new to the world of slipper clutches too, I tried to bang down a few gears and locked the rear up momentarily, the idea is to completely close the throttle when doing it, other than that I'm no use
 
Yeah, apparently the system only works when you have strong vacuum, ie closed throttle. The vacuum actuates the diaphragm down on the outside of the clutch assembly that allows the clutch pack to slip slightly.

My RSVR has that PPC system too though, right? :confused
Tried downshifting quite a bit today and my rear didn't budge at all, so I'm guessing it's working :O
 
As PJ has said above, just remember to have the throttle fully shut when down-shifting otherwise it will not work. Try not to blip the throttle.
 
Built in habit with me to blip the throttle, won't be noticing that slipper clutch anytime soon then! :laugh
 
I'll let you know on sunday how well the slipper works, 1st ride and im gagging to have a good track thrash
 
not as well as a 'full on' slipper clutch. you also really have to being going some for it too kick in, with full systems you get a clunk at the clutch lever abit like a torque wrench, a bit disconcerting at first but you get used to it. Not sure whether the 99-03 had pseudo slipper clutches, but I do know that enthusiasitc down changing used to get mine sideways.(the pseudo slipper on my ZX77 worked better..but its not a grunty v-twin) Now I can feel the slipper 'slipping' as it were ...lovely, cant wait for some really dry roads to try it out properly.

Slipper clutch is only really usfull when your going some. You only notice the diffrence when droping into 1st-2nd from speed and just dump the clutch and normaly the back wheel will lock up and snake all over the place as with a slipper clutch the bike will take care of letting the clutch out stopping it snaking all over the place. Usfull on track on them 1st gear cournors
 
exactly ..scream up to a tight corner, short shift a few gears and dump the clutch..yeehaaw, I'm not pointing sideways anymore!!. The slipper and a quickshifter I had fitted are excellent fun .oh indeedy

A very common fault on earlier model pre 2003.5 RSV Mille and R is the one way clutch vacuum check valve failing. If you can momentarily lock the rear wheel or feel a small hop from the rear on down changes with a closed throttle at any revs then the valve has failed. Mine did last year as i noticed the back wheel starting to hop occasionally.

Aprilia part number 8102741. About £8.00 i think

Rene the slipper clutch on RSV's is vital to stop the rear wheel locking on closed throttle down changes as they will easily lock the rear wheel even at low revs. This is true for all gears not just 1st and 2nd due to the characteristics of a high compression twin cylinder engine.

Easy to check, just remove the valve and blow through from each end. If you can blow through from each end then the valve has failed.

It's located on the right side of the bike ( when sat on ) next to the rear cylinder, below the fuel tank behind the frame spar. It's a tapered tube about 2.5 inches long, either white or red in colour and has two thick vacuum hoses coming out of it. Carefully prise the hoses off the valve, noting the direction of the arrow ( upwards )

I found yesterday their is a form slipper clutch in these motors as I could just change down an it wouldn't hop. It deffo isn't a full on racing slipper clutch though as high rev/heavy braking moments had the back end moving and skipping.
 
i was at donnintgton yesterday and pretty much most of the corners had mine hopping..now i have an o4 model factory and to be honexst I reckon i was down shifting sooner than maybe i should have been. Melbourne was the worst when id left my braking later i found the back hard to stop jumpoing about lol.
Is there one of these on an 04 "one way clutch vacuum check valve"
