16/42 sprocket combo??

Hi guys I'm sure you're sick of sprocket questions :rant BUT I have one myself!!

I looked into it and wanted to get a 16/44 combo as I want a little bit shorter gearing so it power wheelies in second :devious but my garage has said they can't get 44 tooth sprockets anywhere so I've gone for a 42tooth rear. Will this give a noticeable difference from the stock gearing and allow the power wheelies in second?

cheers :thumbup

Put a 15 on the front, pretty much the same thing:biggrin

hmmm.... 15/42 hey!?! I don't want something that's gonna throw me off with a little bit of throttle, I live in Ireland its fecking raining here all the time!! Would 15/42 still be controllable and what about cruising in top gear at 130km/h would it not be very high up the revs, maybe over 6k??? The bike's thirsty enough as it is, only get about 180km until the reserve light comes on!!

cheers for the quick reply matey!!

I can't even remember what I put on now (its in my garage with the ever growing list of mods). Its is however awesome and pulls like a pit pony!!!

Too true. You hear loads about all the different combo's and their + and -. I just went with the most popular after forum research, and the result gave me a better bike.

Totally agree with Badger , it is a great mod , it makes bike better/easier to ride and lots more fun .
sorry can't answer the MPG question but for around £20.00 for a 15T give it a go

Sounds like an 04 on Legs if he's gone for a 42, it won't be unrideable mate with 15/42, i run 15/43 on the road and 15/46 or 47 on the track, a 15 will cost little, give it a try and if you don't like it stick it on ebay, you might lose a tenner at worst, try Talon Engineering for sprockets

put a 15 tooth on front first £8 ish so wont bother you, then try that, if still not pokey enough for you go 42 rear

cheers for all the advice lads. Its a 2001 model. Think that I'll ask the lads to swap for a 15 tooth front and give that a test go 15/42. that gearing commander website is seriously technical I wonder how accurate stats are? Great website though! Do you think that I'll get the power wheelies out of 2nd with that setup ;)

yearp :p 15/42 will definately power wheelie..no problemo of that. :thumbup

Ok Eano as it's a 2001 model, then your standard gearing is 17/42. As Badger suggests go for a 15 tooth front sprocket and keep the rear as a 42 tooth. This is nigh on the same gearing as 16/44 which is considered by most to be the best road gearing. Njoy

I have just fitted a 16/44T 520 RK chain kit. Front sprocket is AFAM, The rear is an Alloy Vortex. I'm rapt with its performance.

I'm running the 15/42 set up and it is way better than the 16/42 it had when I bought it.

True it power wheelies in most gears but it's easily manageable, if your skilled.

If you buy a 15t front sprocket and it's not for you then you've only wasted £18 and you'll have no problems selling it again on Ebay for almost the same money.

i'm now running 15/44 on my 03 RSVR , maybe its my slighty large frame 17 stone + :thumbup but its still very rideable not a wheelie monster at all :dunno .

Hi Guys,
After reading this thread I want to change my standard Mille 2001 gearing to a 15 on the front. I hate driving though London traffic working the clutch in 1st, till my left had feels like its gonna explode!

I found the following site, but which chain would i have on the standard setup ?

http://www.talon-eng.co.uk/products.asp?c_urn=207&show=&bike=21

I'm rather guessing you'd like to know what chain Jacko, you should have 525 pitch :thumbup

Cheers ! Yea Caterpillar it was the chain info, but still good for the feedback on the sprockets.

Looks like that's the next thing on my mod list ;-)
