I've got a 2004 RSV 1000R, it has an alarm and spends most of the year with a dead battery, every time I ride it I charge it the night before and it starts and runs perfectly, but I'm fed up of it killing batteries. I'm considering having the alarms removed, did this on my old Blade and life was good. My current battery is usually 11.7V once charged and the key is turned (engine off).

What are the best and most powerful/reliable batteries for my bike?

Also, is there an easy way to see if I have the charging mod already done? It's got a fair few mods so it may already be done but I could use the extra voltage.

It's almost making me want a Jap bike just for the easy life! Cheers.

Any battery you fit to these bikes ideally has to have a CCA of over 230 really if you want to make sure it has the oomph to start her first time. 200 in my opinion is the absolute bear minimum.

The greater the ah rating too, the longer it should be able to keep its charge as well so if you can get one that is either 14ah or 16ah as well as a CCA of 230 upwards you should be fine. The Yuasa TTZ14BS whilst having a slightly lower ah rating of 11.2 is well recommended (it's a Yuasa so that should speak for itself really) but Motobatt do some good batteries too but you need to search for a replacement that is the right size.

In terms of the charge loss, have you ever changed the battery before? if so did you go through the key on procedure once the new battery was connected again?

Seemingly once the battery is fitted you put the key in the ignition (you don't change the battery with the key in the ignition on the early Gen 2's) and then turn the key to stage 1 for at least 15 seconds before turning it off again, seemingly it is some sort of key registering process or something like that but if you don't do that it can actually flat a new battery in a couple of days.

****Correct battery replacement procedure. Must read.

As for the wiring mods, you need to take your fairing off to check your brown connectors :)

qoute from some1

I didn't get that technical,I just removed the battery and where wires had been bridged I cut off the black wire (they were all black by the way) and remade the original wires again.

Where wires had been spliced I cut the offending alarm one off and insulated the join.

This was a Meta 375T on an Sv thou but unless yours is canbus I assume it will be just as easy,it took me less than an hour to have the unit in the bin I think,I just worked my way through the wires one by one.

A good part of that time was finding out how to remove the rear bodywork.
